UNIT 8 NEW TRENDS IN MANAGEMENT
Read the text and answer the questions/complete the tasks (1-6) below.
The work of a manager has changed radically in the past ten or more years. There are good reasons for that change. Organisations need to be more efficient and flexible to respond to opportunities and challenges in today’s fast changing business world.
As markets become more competitive, there is a constant struggle for the customer. If an organisation cannot provide the right product at the right price and cost, it goes out of business fast. So organisations have to provide what their customers require rather than2 what is most convenient or profitable to produce.
In these conditions, managers cannot be narrow specialists, they should synthesise all information and expertise they have to make the right decisions. Constant professional updating is needed to keep pace with3 change, to be creative and modern.
Because of globalisation of the economy many organisations have teams in different countries, so the task of a manager is to coordinate these global resources, which is more difficult than managing local ones.
As the world is moving faster, managers now have to find ways of shortening the time taken to develop and launch new products, to manufacture and deliver goods or provide services and make decisions. That is why organisations are trying to be more efficient and flexible by outsourcing operations to more specialist firms and focusing on the core business.
The most fundamental change in management over the past decade has been a shift from autocratic styles of leadership towards a people-based approach. It means that the manager is like the conductor of an orchestra, coaching, developing,

coordinating and synthesising the skills of a large number of players, at the same time giving them a certain amount of autonomy and power to improvise.
1. What makes the work of a manager change with the time? 2. How does competition influence organisation management? 3. Why is professional updating essential for managers? 4. How did globalisation change managers’ work? 5. What is the purpose of outsourcing? What goals does it help to achieve? 6. How did the style of leadership change over the past decade? Do you find this change positive or negative?
