Part III - Well stimulation methods
.pdfAdvantages of horizontal wells
Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR):
Thermal methods
–HW enables la greater volume of oil reached directly by heat
Polymer flooding
–High velocities in the vicinity of an injection well may cause polymer molecules break up. Horizontal wells reduce this risk
Miscible flooding (CO2, surfactants, etc.)
–In order to improve sweep efficiency, injection of miscible slugs must be spread over a long distance. In this case, HW will bring an improvement.

Advantages of horizontal wells
Fractured reservoirs
The best way to intersect a network of naturally existing fractures is to drill horizontally. This bring maximum productivity to a HW
Since fractures are vertical and fluid contacts are horizontal, it is clear that fractured reservoirs are particularly attractive targets for HW.
