Electricity can be dangerous if it is carelessly used. A faulty installation or a defective piece ofequipment can cause a serious fire andthere is also a danger of an electric shock.

Many precautions are takea and safety devices are used to minimize these dangers.

Themost commonsafetydeviceused in everyhousehold installationistheordinaryfuse. This is simply apiece of wire, which is connected in series in the circuit. It is of such resistance that itwill melt and therefore break thecurrent, if the current flowing in the circuit exceeds a certain amount. When it happens, we say the fuse "blows".

THE USA

1.The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK) is made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The area ofthe UK is 244,000 sq km and its population is 57 million people.

Priestly, who obtained it by heating mercuric oxide. In industry oxygen is obtained by fractional distillation of liquid air.

Oxygen is a colourless gas. It smells slightly of chlorine. It is denser than air and soluble in water. Oxygen doesn't burn but supportsburning.

Oxygen is used to produce iron from ore in a blast-furnace and convert iron into steel. It produces a higher furnace temperature and gives a flame with a temperature of about 3,000°. This flame melts steeleasily. Oxygen is also used for cutting and welding metal sections.
