CAD programs are much more powerful than drawing and graph programs. A CAD system not only creates and stores an image, it can save and use related information, such as the size of an object, the formulas used to create the object, the raw materials and so on.
Some CAD system are generic, while others are tailored to meet the needs of specific users. One microcomputer product, for example, is designed for use in architectural engineering. At the other end of the scale is a supercomputer dedicated to producing special effects for motion pictures and television programs.
Engineers use CAD system to draw electronic circuits; fashion designers, to create next year clothes; biologists, to produce picture of viruses.
Computer-aided design frequently is integrated with computer-aided manufacturing to form CAD/CAM systems that can be used for everything from product conceptualization to fabrication to inventory control. Such system have become essential tools of the automotive industry and many others.
