Introduction.
The international requirements for proficiency in English (STCW 95).
Marine training is based on standards established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). The 1995 amendments to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) 1978 came into force in 1997. The international requirements for proficiency in English have been expanded.
“Officers of the navigational watch will require knowledge of written and spoken English adequate to understand charts, nautical publications, meteorological information and messages concerning the ship’s safety and operation, and adequate to communicate with other ships and coast stations and multilingual crew, and use IMO Standard Maritime Communication Phrases.”
All seamen must “have an ability to use at least an elementary English vocabulary with an emphasis on nautical terms and situations.” (The Revised STCW Convention)
This book is for seamen who are not native speakers of English. It provides practice and revision for professionals and cadets of Maritime colleges and Marine Institutes. The book can be used in the classroom and for self-study. It will also be a useful source of information for teachers who need to run courses for seamen.
