There is an important distinction between slender consonants and broad consonants. A slender consonant is one which is beside an e or i. a broad consonant is one beside an a, o or u. for most consonants the slender pronunciation is different from the broad one.

The addition of `h` to many consonants changes the sound of them. This is technically known as `aspiration`

In inter – vocalic position is a voiced flap [d] e.g. city [sidi:]

[t] broad as th in thin but with tongue on back of teeth. Tà [thaw]=am, is, are. [t] slender is sharp [t], almost a [tsh] e.g. tine [tshinnuh]=fire

d

[d] broad as [th] in this but with tongue on back of teeth [dhoon]. [d] slender is sharp [d], almost as [j].e.g. dearg [jarrug]=red shut

k

K is missing, so: «C» broad [k]. e.g. coss [kuss]=foot. «C» slender [ky] as k and y in thank you. E.g. ceann [kyown] head

g

[g] is hard as in garden, gift [guth] [guh] voice

f

v

[v] is missing. The letters V and Z are occasionally used in Irish for imported words from other languages, such as veidlin and zù which mean violin and zoo.

May be lost in intervocalic position/ e.g. mother [mo:ər]

[z] is missing. Like [v]
