RP vowel vs. GA vowels

RP

GA articultary modifications

GA distribution

GA disappearance and substitution

GA processes

i:

Distributed differently from RP. In words like very, pity GA has [i:] rather than [i]. in word – final position it’s often even diphthongized.

In lever [li:və] – [levər]

*The nasalization of vowels, when they are preceded or followed by a nasal consonant (in such words as take, small name etc) it` s also called an American twang. It’s incidental and needn`t be marked in phonemic transcription.

* Slight rise of the in tongue position during the pronunciation of tense vowels leads to a diphthongal quality of tense vowels which contrast to a monophthongal quality of lax vowels.

a:

Like #[ǽ]

[a:] is changed into [ǽ] e.g. path [pǽӨ], vase [va:z] – [veiz], tomato [təma:təu] – [təmeitou]

o:

In cordial [ko:diəl] – [korjəl]
