Stage A
Approaching the Topic
Read, intone and learn by heart the two texts below:
Doctor Sandford’s House
Doctor Sandford’s house is not large, but it is comfortable and well-planned. It is a small two-storeyed cottage.
In front of the house there is a green lawn and a lot of flowers. Behind it there is a little orchard with a few fruit trees in it. On the ground floor there is a kitchen, a pantry, a dining-room, a cosy sitting-room and Dr sandford’s study. There are also several rooms upstairs on the first floor: the Sandfords’ bedrooms, Grandmother’s room, which is also Benny’s nursery, Betty’s room and the bathroom.
The furniture is modern and quite new. But dr Sandford says he must pay a lot of money for the house and the furniture. He must pay the money for many years before he can call the house his own.
Answer the questions on the text:
Is Doctor Sandford’s house large?
What is there in front of the house and behind it?
What rooms are there in the house?
What kind of furniture is there in the house?
Is it Dr Sandford’s own house?
Anna is looking for a room to rent. At last she has found the room that suits her perfectly. She likes the look of the house and the room immediately.
A Room with a View
What a lovely room! It’s in a big well-built house. Anna likes it very much. And such a marvellous view! Doesn’t the river look beautiful when the sun is shining on it? She does like to live near water.
The room is bigger than she expected – about twenty feet (6 metres) long by six feet (5 metres) wide. One end has a curtain in front of it. In one corner there is a wash-basin. Anna turns on the taps. The water from the hot tap is really hot. There is also an electric cooker, and on a shelf above it there are three new saucepans and a frying pan. Beside the cooker there is a small cupboard. Anna opens it. In it there are plates, cups, saucers and a teapot. In a drawer at the top there are knives, forks and spoons. This part of the room is really a small kitchen.
Anna pulls back the curtain and looks at the rest of the room. Beneath the window there is a dressing-table with three drawers and a mirror. There are two armchairs, a small table with a reading lamp and a few pictures on the walls. Anna doesn’t like the pictures. “I’ll soon change these”, she thinks, for she has already decided to rent the room.
Now speak about yourself:
Where do you live now: at home, at the hostel or rent a room?
Do you like the district you live in?
Is it in the center or on the outskirts?
Is there a supermarket, any other shops, a cinema, a library in the neighbourhood?
Is it a busy shopping centre?
Are there always many people around?
Is the traffic heavy?
Is it a long way from the University?
Is there a bus or tram stop not far from your house?
Do you live far from the Underground?
Is your street lined with trees?
Is there a nice yard behind the house?
Are there any old trees and flowerbeds in the yard?
What kind of house do you live in: detached, semi-detached, a cottage or a block of flats?
What conveniences have you got?
Is there a rubbish chute?
What about a telephone?
Which of the rooms is the cosiest? What makes it so cosy?
Describe the room you live in.
Is it square or long and narrow?
Is it always in good order?
Is there much furniture in your flat?
Is it all modern or are there any pieces of the past?
How is the furniture arranged?
Do you think it is convenient to have built-in furniture?
Where does your mother keep all kitchen things?
Is the ceiling high?
Is the floor parquetted?
Are the walls papered or whitewashed?
Are there any carpets on the walls and the floor?
How many shelves are there in your room? What things do you keep there?
On what floor is your flat?
Is it nice to live on the ground or top floor?
Is there a lift in your house?
Is your flat well planned and spacious?
Read the following story about the advantages and disadvantages of sharing a flat, represent its contents closely to the text and express your point of view on the given subject:
Sharing a flat certainly has some advantages. To begin with, it should be cheaper, and if you’re sharing with people that you get on well with, it is nice to have some company at home rather than being all on your own. Also the household chores are shared, and that is very important. Particularly when you are younger, and you are living apart from your parents for the first time. It can be very enjoyable to live with people of your own age, whose interests and life-style you share.
However, sharing a flat does have some distinct disadvantages, and the main one is that the flat is not your own. So you cannot do what you want in it. What happens if you want to go to bed but your flat-mate wants to play music? To a certain extent you have to be unselfish. What is more, there can be little privacy.
I would say that as you get older, it is probably better to live on your own. Having had my own flat for a few years, I wouldn’t like to have to share again.
