Use your ideas to develop criteria for a successful building project. (Work in pairs.)

Katy Mills Workforce

Training & Child

Care Facility - Katy,

Texas

Client Project

Adjacent to Katy Mills Mall in Katy, Texas, the Houston Community College wanted to create a System Childcare Center and Workforce Training Center in order to provide affordable education, healthcare and daycare programs to underprivileged adults. The Workforce Training Center would allow people to acquire skills in various fields and offer them the opportunity for employment within the surrounding community. The Childcare Center, administered through a contract between HCCS and Katy’s Early Childhood Enrichment Center, would provide a safe, enriching learning environment for children.

Client Need

Houston Community College needed to build a new facility to accommodate the adult education classes and daycare program. They chose modular construction due to a limited time frame. Houston Community College’s primary contractor awarded the project to Williams Scotsman because of their design-build capabilities.

Katy Mills Mall was originally opposed to modular buildings on its premises, so Williams Scotsman assisted the college with a design concept that had a more permanent appearance.

The Williams Scotsman Solution

Williams Scotsman provided a custom 11,520 square foot building with an “L” shaped configuration. This configuration was used to provide two distinct areas, one being conducive to the childcare aspect and the other appropriate for a training center. A main entry canopy was designed and constructed by Williams Scotsman, contributing to the permanent look of the building. The addition of hardi-panel stucco exterior siding, vivid color combinations and geometrically configured windows helped to finish the appearance. The company used the Concurrent Construction process, which saved time, allowing the building construction to begin off site while the actual location was prepared.

The Result

Houston Community College was excited with their new modular building from Williams Scotsman. The completed building exceeded their expectations. “We are quite pleased with the results. The building meets our quality requirements, is highly functional, and aesthetically pleasing. We have received many compliments.” Dr. Lee Murdy, Houston Community College Representative.

Activity 2.

You work for a building company bidding on the contract to

build a new university in your city.

1.Develop a project for the tender using a PROJECT CASE STUDY OF

HOUSTON COMMUNITY COLLEGE SYSTEM as an example.

2. Prepare an oral presentation of your project. Use presentation guidelines and useful language to help you:

Presentation Guidelines

Determine your purpose

Use these questions as a guide: What do I want the audience to know /to believe /to do when I’ve finished the presentation?

Analyze your audience

Determine audience’s level of experience or knowledge about your topic, general education level and age of your audience, audience’s attitude toward the topic, etc.

Gather information

Keep in mind you should give the audience only the facts necessary to accomplish your goals.

Structure the presentation

Take into account listeners remember openings and closings best.

Use visual aids

Use charts, graphs, and illustrations (drawings and photos) and computer-presentation software.

Practice the presentation

Practice out loud. Make eye contact, use movement and gestures.

Don’t read your presentation.

Talk to your audience. Use your notes as prompts as needed.

Group presentation

Share the work load. Make the presentation look unified – not like separate presentations put together. Give equal presentation time to each group member
