The Sierra Club is an organization whose goals center on the protection of the environment. It was founded in 1692 in San Francisco by naturalist John Muir, who was intent on preserving the natural beauty and harmony of Sierra Nevadas in eastern California.

Today the Sierra Club boasts almost 200,000 members in all fifty states of the United States. Through activities such as conferences, lectures, exhibits, expeditions, and films, the organization works to continue the effort begun by John Muir. The Sierra Club also publishes a weekly newsletter, a bimonthly magazine, and various books.

В 1948 году в мире электроники была представлена революционная концепция: было объявлено об изобретении транзистора, кристалла, который усиливает сигнал. Ничего подобного в электронике не происходило со времен открытия триода вакуумной лампы в 1907 году. Несколько лет спустя радиолампы заменили кристаллические детекторы эпохи беспроводной связи.

Теперь кристаллический усилитель, транзистор, бросает вызов вакуумной трубке, потому что транзисторы меньше, проще, эффективнее и долговечнее. Транзисторы уже заменили лампы в слуховых аппаратах, обеспечив неслыханную экономию заряда батареи. Более того, многие транзисторные схемы имеют меньше компонентов, чем схемы вакуумных ламп, таких как мультивибраторы. Например, в переключающих схемах, таких как мультивибраторы, один транзистор с точечным контактом выполняет работу двух триодных ламп.
