Pre-reading Task

Translate the sentences in writing before reading the text. Look up the unknown words in the dictionary.

  1. She wished Mary Poppins did not know so very much about the best people than she did herself.

  2. Once outside in the Lane she set off walking very quickly as if she were afraid the afternoon would run away from her if she didn’t keep up with it.

  3. She stopped beside an empty motor-car in order to put her hat straight with the help of the wind screen, in which it was reflected.

  4. And by the way she said it she made him feel that by rights the picture should have been in the Royal Academy.

  5. So, still admiring themselves and each other, they moved on together through the little wood, till presently they came upon a little open space filled with sunlight.

  6. Best of all, there were two plates of whelks and two pins to pick them out with.

  7. They turned to find a tall man in a black coat coming out of the wood with a table napkin over his arm.

  8. I don’t remember seeing that in the picture either.

  9. The Merry-go-Round was just slowing as they approached it.

  10. Standing on the pavement she gazed at him for a long minute, and then her glance explored the wood behind him for the waiter.

Read chapter 2 “The day Out” pp. 12-19.

Prepare a good reading and translate the passage beginning from “How green it was…..” on p. 15 and ending with “….. and carrying the umbrella’ on p. 16.

III. Write out from the text the words and phrases relating to the topic “Meal” and learn them.

IV. Reproduce some situations described in the text using the following words and word-combinations.

  1. Every second Thursday, put on, a parrot’s head for a handle, to look her best, walking very quickly, the day out, to be reflected, be seen by everybody, the Match-man, pavement pictures, to do things turn-about.

  2. On this particular day, tiptoeing, a ladylike cough, a very important person in his life, to look sadly into the cap, to take sb. to tea, to be going to sigh, to be nice of sb., to squeeze a hand, to point to a painting, a fair treat, in the distance, in the background to catch hold of a hand, to look very excited, a real idea.

  3. To go into the picture, right inside, can hardly believe, to change, an entirely new suit, to be polished, to look at oneself in the mirror, to admire sb., through the wood, Afternoon-Tea, to be pleased, the waiter, a pile of raspberry jam cakes, to help oneself to sth., to ask for the bill, the Merry-go-round, to show the way out, to shake sb’s hand, to fade, to disappear, behind the trees.

Reading-Comprehension Task

I. Explain what is meant by the following. Expand the situation.

  1. I meant that if she didn’t get what she wanted Mary Poppins would not stay.

  2. The Match-Man had two professions.

  3. Business is bad today.

  4. I got an idea! A real idea.

  5. Each noticed that other had changed.

  6. Don’t you know that everybody’s got a fairyland of their own?

II. Render the conversion between Marry Poppins and the Match-Man in indirect speech (before they got into the picture).

III. Dramatize the episode inside the picture.

IV. Discuss in class.

  1. Why did Mrs. Banks allow Mary Poppins to have her day every second Thursday?

  2. What kind of portrait of Mary Poppins can you draw out of the two chapters? Speak about her appearance and character.

  3. Who was the Match-Man? What were the relations between Mary Poppins and the Match-Man?

  4. Was Mary Poppins pleased with her day out? What did she tell the children about it? Render the conversation in indirect speech as if you were Jane (Michael).

V. Write a brief summary of the chapter.
