Тексты учебного пособия заимствованы из современных англоязычных журналов “The Economist”, “Time”, “Newsweek”, Интернет-изданий “BBC News online”, “CNN News online” ( рубрики “Technology” и “Business”), 2001-2003

годы. Все материалы являются аутентичными, неадаптированными, только частично сокращены для учебных целей. Значительная часть текстов рассчитана на студентов, изучающих английский язык на продвинутом уровне

(upper-intermediate).

Cambridge University Press,

материал web-сайтов дистанционного обучения английскому языку, а также следующие словари:

1.Англо-русский словарь по вычислительной технике./ Под ред. М.П.

PART A: TEXTS, GLOSSARY, VOCABULARY IN CONTEXT, READING COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS

Text 1 RACE FOR THE FASTEST COMPUTER HEATS UP

"There's a bit of nationalism involved," said Jack Dongarra of the University of Tennessee. "We like to think in the U.S. that we have the most powerful computers. Well, the Japanese have it now." Japan's NEC jolted the computer world in April 2002 when its Earth Simulator, which knits together 5,000 processors to attain a theoretical speed of 40 trillion calculations per second, became the first machine built outside the United States to top the supercomputer speed list. The Yokohama, Japanbased Earth Simulator not only took the lead, but also did so by trouncing the thenfastest machine, IBM's ASCI White, by running almost five times as fast. "It's an exciting time," said Dongarra, who leads the group of researchers that tracks the world's 500 speediest computers, known as the Top500 list. "We went through a period of doldrums. The Earth Simulator has revived interest in high-power computing."

At the SuperComputing 2002 conference in Baltimore, U.S. Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham was to announce a $290 million contract with IBM to build two new supercomputers, one of which, dubbed ASCI Purple, is expected to clock in at 100 teraflops, or trillions of calculations per second. Like so many of America's fastest computers, ASCI Purple will be used to simulate the explosions and decay of the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile without resorting to test detonations of the warheads. In 2005, IBM plans to deliver a second supercomputer to the Department of Energy, dubbed Blue Gene/Lite, which will run 130,000 processors at a theoretical top speed of 360 teraflops -- more than triple the speed of ASCI Purple.

IBM says Blue Gene/Lite, running the Linux operating system, will tackle research on global climate change and study the interaction between atmospheric chemistry and pollution. The "Lite" designation refers to IBM's ongoing Blue Gene supercomputer experiment, where the company has been researching the techniques

6

behind building a supercomputer that could handle a petaflop -- or a quadrillion calculations -- per second. Both of the mega-machines will reside at the DOE's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, California. Significantly for IBM, the operating software and the interconnection of ASCI Purple's 12,500 processors are the same basic innards that power its P-Series mainframe computers, said Dave Turek, IBM's vice president of deep computing. Except that ASCI Purple will harbor two petabytes -- or quadrillion bytes -- of disk storage, about 30 times the contents of the Library of Congress, Turek estimated.

The tough part, Turek and Dongarra say, is interconnecting the processors so they act like a single human brain, rather than a collection of cells. IBM said ASCI Purple would approach the brain's processing power. "When they get this large it becomes a significant challenge to put these things together," Dongarra said. "It's a real tour de force in engineering." All but a few of today's top supercomputers use a parallel processing system that interconnects thousands of mass-produced microprocessors. The biggest exception is NEC's Earth Simulator, which uses a "vector parallel" construction of linked processors, an older method that handles computations one at a time.

Whether IBM's ASCI Purple becomes the first machine to knock NEC's Earth Simulator off the block remains to be seen. Other companies are working toward the same goal, including Hewlett-Packard Co. - builder of the current No. 2 and 3 machines _ Cray Inc., which is designing a pair of alternate systems for the Department of Energy, and NEC itself, analysts said. About 90 percent of the top 500 supercomputers are U.S.-made, according to the Top 500 list, compiled by researchers at University of Mannheim, Germany; the Department of Energy's National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center in Berkeley, California, and the University of Tennessee. For Turek, nationalism is no concern. "We're international," he said. "For us, every nation is an IBM nation."

Text 2 RETURN OF THE COMPUTER DINOSAURS

Depending on your age, the words ZX Spectrum or BBC Micro will either provoke a blank, quizzical stare or a bout of warm dewy-eyed nostalgia. If you are in your late-20s to late-30s, you may remember the once great home computers such as the Sinclair Spectrum, the BBC Micro, Commodore 64 and Dragon 32. Twenty years ago, home computing experienced a revolution, as cheap and affordable microcomputers swamped the market place. They may be considered obsolete but these microcomputers can be brought back to life.

Emulators, now stored on the Internet, are programs running on a PC that can mimic the functions of the 80s computers and run the old software. Games like Donkey Kong, Jet Set Willy and Horace Goes Skiing, veritable dinosaurs in terms of their sophistication, can be played again through what is known as retrogaming. In fact, there is a burgeoning cyber culture on the net where such games and emulators can be downloaded.

Paul Burgin, who wrote a Dragon 32 emulator and runs a website devoted to the old computer, said: "For most people that get in touch with me, it's because there's a particular game that they want to play again, one which they loved when they were younger. "Emulators provide a convenient way of keeping hold of a part of computing history whilst participating in the state-of-the-art. "They are also a great way of preserving our computing heritage - they don't wear out, use no desk space and gather no dust."

9

But before you start firing up your search engines to look for emulators a word of warning: in some cases, it is illegal to emulate computers of old and illegal to play old games on your PC. Terry Anslow, chief investigator for the European Leisure Software Association (Elspa), the body which protects software copyright, said: "It is a criminal act to copy these games from the internet. "By emulating a computer system or game, you are effectively reproducing a trademark and, without permission, that is an infringement of intellectual property rights." But pro-Emulator campaign group Clear argues that many of these games are no longer commercially available, that many of the software houses have shut down and the programmers themselves are often keen to have people continue to use their games. One proemulation site lists 50 programmers, which it claims have allowed use of their games through emulators.

David Braben, who co-wrote the classic Elite game on the BBC Micro, runs a website with versions of the game available for download. And Jeff Minter, a programmer on the Commodore 64 and Atari ST computers, has also waived his copyright on old games. Mr Anslow said: "There is still a rights holder somewhere. Copying is no different from any other crime. Just because we are in the digital age doesn't mean that things are up for grabs." But he conceded that where copyright had been waived then there was no crime.

Amstrad, which owns the Spectrum copyright, is perfectly happy for users to "resurrect" the computer through emulation. "We are more than happy to see people continuing to emulate our old computers as it keeps the Amstrad/Sinclair brands known," said Cliff Lawson, principal software design engineer at Amstrad.

The US-based Interactive Digital Software Association, which acts as a security patrol for the World Wide Web, said "the copyrights of games are valid even if the games are not found on store shelves, and copying or distributing those games is a copyright infringement". It also points out that copyright, in America at least, lasts for 75 years and that the playing of "classic games" is a crime and not just nostalgia. Websites found to be infringing copyright are shut down.
