Unit I. Educational texts

Part 1

The Economy of the United Kingdom

1.Read and translate the text

Britain remains the major producer of industrial goods and provider of services, as well as the center of world trade and finance.

Like many modern developed countries, the UK has a mixed economy. This means that some sectors of the economy are operated by the government and some are operated by private businesses.

More than 2/3 of hired workers are occupied in the sphere of services, and their greatest quantity works in financial sector.

Great Britain possesses big stocks of resources of energy, including oil, natural gas, and coal, than any of the countries of the European Community. Britain’s land surface is minimal compared to many other nations, but British agriculture is very intensive and highly productive.

In the early 2000’s agriculture employed approximately 1.4% of the workforce and contributed 1.0 per cent of the gross domestic product (the GDP). In the early 2000’s Britain’s service sector accounted for nearly 3/4 of the GDP and employed almost 4/5 of the workforce. The service industries include finance, retailing, wholesaling, tourism, business services, transport, and many others.

Tourism has become an increasingly important economic sector in Britain, employing at least 7% of the workforce.

Britain remains one of the world’s leading trading nations in the 21st century. Much of Britain’s trade is with the European Union, especially Germany, France, and the Netherlands.

The government is a major purchaser of goods, particularly military equipment. In economic emergencies the government can control prices and incomes to a considerable extent.

Britain’s Fallen Star

1. Read and translate the text.

For a decade the British economy won plaudits for its good behavior, not least from foreign investors whose confidence kept sterling strong and stable. Since the global financial crisis began in August 2007, that image has been thoroughly trashed: growth has turned to recession; unemployment is mounting; and the pound has suffered its biggest fall since the 1970s.

What appeared to be a model and well-run economy, expanding steadily for 16 years without inflationary strains, now looks a Heath Robinson affair. Among big economies, Britain is neck and neck with Germany and Japan in the race to the bottom, and there is plenty to worry about beyond the downturn.

Official figures show that the decline in residential investment was the single most important thing pushing the economy into recession in the third quarter of 2008, when GDP fell by 0.6% from its level in the spring. Output fell by a further 1.5% in the final three months of 2008, the biggest quarterly decline since 1980. Manufacturing dropped by 5.1%.

The employment rate of those aged 18-24 fell by 3.9 percentage points in the year to the 1st quarter of 2009. By contrast, it declined by only 1.5 points among 25-34 year olds and by 0.4 points for older people up to the state-pension age. The jobless rate among 18-24-year-olds, just under 10% in late 2003, has jumped to 16%, though it is still lower than in many European countries. Britain remains a diversified economy, and it retains a flexible labor market that will allow companies to adapt to new conditions. The recovery might just come sooner to Britain than to countries that look more resilient now.
