Although not quite as popular as in continental Europe, diesels still account for a very significant share of the UK market, with some dieselsnotably the CITROEN XANTIA-comfortably outselling their petrol equivalents. When turbocharged, the best examples of the breed combine near-petrol levels of performance with much superior fuel economy. Leading the field here is VW/AUDI with its range of direct injection TDi units, with ROVER not far behind (its new 220Sdi gives remarkable nearhot hatch performance). ALFA 145/146

ALFA offers two quite different body styles for its two hatchbacks. The 145 has thee doors and a market ‘hot hatchback’ look to it. The 146 is

the same from the windscreen forwards, put with roomier, more conservative five-door styling. Initially fitted with flat-four engines, these are gradually being replaced in 1996/1997 with the new 16-valve straightfour units of 1.6; 1.8 and 2.0 litres. Changes to the suspension and steering are happening too.

While neither of the flat-four engines is particularly quick, the first of the new engines – the 2.0-litre – transforms the 145/146 into a delightful sports saloon, so there’s hope at the lower end once the new engines arrive. Inside sports seats provide good support, though room in the rear is only so-so in the 146, worse in the 145. The facia is highly stylised, driving position reasonable and the poor gearchange is said to have been improved.

MERCEDES – BENZ C-Class

Read the text about Suzuki X-90, translate it and make up a story about Suzuki Swift using some additional information below.

SUZUKI X-90

Suzuki’s cute little Cappuccino sports car may recently have ceased production but the X-90 is here to fill the fun-car gap. Based on the mechanics of the Vitara off-roader, the X-90 is a strict two-seater with a separate boot and lift-off glass roof panels. The familiar 1.6-liter petrol engine is used, with the option of either two or four-wheel-drive; automatic

transmission is available as an option on the 4×4. Equipment levels are good, with twin airbags, power steering and central locking.

While the X-90 stands out in a crowd, with its distinctive appearance sporty, bucketed seats, it doesn’t have much else going for it. The ride is bouncy and the handling remains pitched at off-road use rather than providing a sharp Tarmac drive. The performance is adequate with plenty of gear changing but there’s the rub – the gearchange is really hard work. In the end, the X-90 just isn’t half the fun its looks suggest.

THE VOLVO S80

This year Russian car enthusiasts have been delighted by two new models: the “Volvo S80” and the “Chrysler 300M”; they both went on sale with Russian dealers this autumn and have been on display to the general public and we desided to devote this review to one of them.

The days when cars with the famous “Volvo” trademark could be recognized by their angular shape are gradually fading into the past; the desire to make them look more modern has obliged the designers to depart from the familiar shapes and to a certain extent to revise their philosophy

of car design. Some experts maitain that “Volvo” has lost its identity as a conseequence of this, while others think the opposite: that it is high time that they conformed with modern trends. Whatever the case, the customer will still have the last word!

The S80 is a car of VIP-class. It will be produced only as a saloon car (there are no plans for an estate). According to “Volvo”, the potential customer for the car can be characterised as follows: “A well-to-do, welleducated person, who does not intend to show off his position in society with the aid of a car.”

The exterior of the car has a very modern appearance, the design of its rear lights being particularly original. Even the “Volvo” logo looks unfamiliar, placed as it is in the center of the boot rather than at the side.

The standard of comfort in the S80 is of the highest class. At the sixcylinder engine is in a transverse position (for the first time, incidentally), the interior of the car is very spacious. It is literally crammed with the most modern technical gadgetry; you can operate the sound system, the integral computer, the cruise control system, the navigation system and even the mobile telephone without taking your hands off the wheel – the controls for all these are duplicated on the steering wheel.

One of the S80’s special features is its GSM-standard integral mobile telephone. It can safely be used while the car is in motion: the microphone is in the rear-view mirror (inside the car) and the loudspeaker is in the driver’s headrest. The “Send” and “Stop” buttons are duplicated on the steering wheel. Safety comes first!

The “Volvo S80” also has a navigation system, which can pinpoint the car’s position and help you to choose the best route; a pleasant voice will tell you when and where you should turn. This facility cannot, however, be used to its fullest extent in Russia.

The engineers have shown concern for the passengers in the rear of the car as well; they have their own separate ventilation ducts, which provide warm or cold air and prevent the rear windows from steaming up. There is also a separate 12V power point, so that you can use electrical appliances on your journey. For the smallest passengers there is a child’s seat in the rear with its own seat belt; it is concealed in the central arm-rest of the back seat and is the safest place for children between the ages of 4 and 10.

“Volvo” is still the leader in terms of safety; in developing the S80, the engineers have aimed at the very best, paying great attention to passive, as well as active , safety.

One of the new introductions is a system of protection against “whiplash”, when the car is run into from behind; in such accidents, even at fairly low speeds, there is a risk of serious injury to the neck and spine.The “WHIPS” system has been invented to avoid this: in the event of the car being hit from behind, the back of the seat begins to move backwards with the passenger, reducing the force of inertia, then swings back to counter the forces which throw the head sharply forward, causing injuries. All this happens, of course, in a matter of seconds.

All S80 cars are equipped with side air-bags, which help to reduce the injuries received in a side-on crash, protecting the heads and necks of those in the headlights and sidelights will remain for 90 seconds to light your way and then turn off automatically.

Finally, the most important question how much will it cost. The price of the “Volvo S80” for Russian customers will vary between around $ 60,000 and $ 68,000.

Translate the text from Russian into English and give the title:

В Японии начались продажи хэтчбеков Toyota Corolla нового поколения. Это уже третья модификация новой Короллы: в августе прошлого года в Японии появились седан и универсал.

Переднеприводной хэтчбек короче седана на 190 мм: длина машины – 4175 мм. Двигателей предлагается два – оба 4- цилиндровые, 16-клапанные. Полуторалитровый агрегат с изменяемыми фазами газораспределения VVT-i развивает 110 л.с.
