1

1)иметь зачет за I семестр изучения языка;

при обучении на базе среднего общего образования (полный курс) – контрольные работы № 4, 5, 6;

при обучении на базе среднего специального образования (сокращенный курс) – контрольные работы № 4, 5, если учебный график по специальности предусматривает выполнение двух работ, или контрольную работу № 4, если учебный график предусматривает одну работу;

ATOMIC POWER PLANT

1.For centuries coal, oil, wind and water were widely used by man to produce steam and electricity. Today there are many sources of power. Our time is called the age of atomic energy. Scientists of many countries were working hard for more than a century to find out the atom’s secret.

2.Nowadays the energy of the atom is applied in all the fields of man’s activity, including power engineering. Atomic power plants are considered to be modern installations. Everyone knows the world’s first atomic power plant to have been put into operation in 1954 near Moscow. It opened the era of the peaceful use of nuclear energy for generating electricity. Today powerful atomic power stations are operating in many countries.

3.An atomic power plant is known to consist of several main units and a great number of auxiliary ones. These include a nuclear reactor, a conventional turbogenerator, a steam condenser with circulating water and a switchboard.

4.In a nuclear reactor which is cooled by water uranium is utilized as a

fuel. Cooling water circulates through a system of tubes, where it is heated to a temperature of 250-300o C. In order to prevent boiling of water, it is fed into the reactor at a pressure up to 150 atmospheres. During the reactor’s operation heat and radioactive radiation are produced.

5.Atomic power plants have their advantages as well as disadvantages. The operation of reactors and steam generators is noiseless; the atmosphere is not polluted with dust and smoke. As to the fuel consumption, it is of no special importance and there is no problem of fuel transportation.

6.The main disadvantage of power plants utilizing nuclear fuel is their radiation. Radiation produced in the reactors is dangerous for the personnel responsible for their maintenance. To protect people from radiation special measures are to be taken. That is why, the reactors and steam generators are installed under ground and are shielded by thick (up to 1.5 m) concrete walls. The controlling devices are operated automatically.

6

7. It should also be said that an intensive research is being carried out to utilize the atom’s energy not through the conventional steam turbine generator but through the conversion of atomic power directly into electricity.

«YES» TO NUCLEAR POWER ENGINEERING

1.The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences was reported to come in conflict with the majority of Swedes. The contradiction is over nuclear power engineering. According to the Academy, Swedes oppose atomic power generation because they do not understand it. That is why experts think that the public must get more information on the advantages and disadvantages of different energy sources.

2.Officially it is planned to close all nuclear power stations in Sweden by 2010. But this would be destructive for the country both economically and ecologically. The scientists hope the existing atomic power stations to operate for dozens more years.

3.The debate over nuclear power as an energy source is expected to continue in Sweden. But one must be absolutely sure the nuclear power stations are safe. That is why, improving of safety measures at these stations is considered to be more important than building any new plants.

4.Recently rather widespread has become the «green» movement. The German environment protection activists are distributing a badge saying: «Atomic Energy? No. Thanks». The badge is considered to be the result not only of tragedies like Chernobyl. We know of many mistakes made by engineers in different countries.

5.In 1979, for example, in the USA there was a leakage of radioactive water from the reactor. The leakage was accompanied with the accumulation of radioactive gases in the upper part of the reactor. As a result, one person died, about a hundred were hospitalized and 1,400 evacuated from the contaminated area. Similar accidents are known to have taken place in 1974 in Switzerland, Sweden and South Korea. In all these cases the fault was with the equipment supplied by the American Westinghouse corporation. Other accidents included a leakage of the radioactive fuel, overheating and emission of radioactive steam, fires of the reactor’s electrical equipment, accidents of protecting devices.

8

6. Nevertheless, nuclear power engineering is considered to be among the safest and ecologically least harmful industries. The task is opposing people’s emotions with precise scientific-technical information. At the same time designers and scientists have to improve modern technologies of nuclear power engineering. There is no way back.

3.If the telescope had not been invented, a great number of stars would have never been discovered.

IV.

SOLAR PLANTS

1. About a half of Russia’s territory is known to lie above the 60th parallel where the intensity of solar radiation is rather low. Is it realistic to speak of the use of solar installations under these conditions? Scientists say solar power is quite advantageous even in areas beyond the Polar Circle where the sun shines round the clock in summer. In spite of the low intensity of the sun’s radiation it is quite enough to provide energy for heating water and energizing electric devices from photoelectric batteries.

2.Of course, speaking about highly efficient utilization of solar energy, we are primarily thinking of southern regions. More than 50 million of people of the Crimea, the Caucasus, Central Asia and some other regions live far from the centralized systems of energy supply. That’s why it is important to build solar complexes there. The use of solar installations in these regions for hot water supply alone would make it possible to conserve 15-20 million tons of equivalent fuel a year.

3.Several British firms offer equipment for lighting up remote places with solar-powered street lamps. The lamps work on energy stored up during the day in a solar panel. The solar panel produces electricity, which charges a battery. When the sun goes down, the battery power is used to run the lights. Each lamp has its own panel, so the system can be used for one individual lamp or for a row of them.

4.In the south of Saudi Arabia there is a motorway tunnel, miles away from any power supply, which is lit day and night by the solar-powered equipment. The solar panels provide direct power during the day and charge storage batteries (аккумуляторная батарея) to light the tunnel at night. Solar cells are still expensive but the advantage of sun-powered lamps is obvious: they can bring light to areas lying far from any other power supply.

5.In the southern cities there are buildings equipped with solar systems for hot water supply and air conditioning. The solar systems are used together with the existing heating systems. In summer they are the main
