The emblem of Russia is a double-headed eagle, the most ancient symbols. The symbol of Russia is a three-coloured flag. It has three horizontal stripes: white, blue, red. The English language developed on the basis of the dialects of Angles and Saxons who invaded the British Isles in the fifth century. Later it was influenced by the language of Scandinavian Vikings and by Norman French. Many Latin and Greek words came into English during the Renaissance.

At the present time when there are close ties among nations, various languages influence each other, and English also experiences this influence.

English has become the language of science, literature, education, it is one of the official languages of the United Nations and of many other international organizations, and this makes it one of the main languages in politics. Hundreds and hundreds of books, magazines and newspapers are printed in English and read all over the world. It is the language of modern music, cinema and theatre, as well as of the international tourism.

English is widely taught in our century now. The integration of Russia into the world community makes it necessary for all people to know English, the main language of international communication.

The British press

The press is a mirror of current events. This proves to be true when you look through any newspaper. There are a lot of photos, articles, short and long, that inform readers of the latest events. It has been claimed that the British read more newspapers than any other people throughout the United Kingdom. All British papers can be classified as either “quality” or “popular” papers. A “quality” paper is a serious national paper that aims at the educated reader. The best known British newspapers which give serious coverage of the news and comment are “The Times”, “The Gardian”, “The Financial Times” and “The Independent”. They contain information on home and foreign affairs, serious editorials, art and literary reviews. They provide up-to-date financial information and professional advertising.

Some newspapers have colour supplement, with many photographs and advertisements. A popular paper is a newspaper that is designed for the undemanding reader. Such papers have brief and direct news reports and a large number of photographs. Much attention is given to personal stories. Especially when they mention a figure in the public eye, such as a member of the royal family, a political figure or a film star. The style of English in these newspapers is often conversational with much use of slang, catchy headlines. Among these newspapers are “The Daily Express”, “The Daily Mirror”, “The Star”. In addition to national daily newspapers there are nine national papers published on Sundays. Several of them include coloured magazines.

Another great holiday is the New Year's Day. People see the old year off and the New Year in. Most people stay up all night, even children. At midnight many people go outside and shout "Happy New Year!" Some people set off fireworks and blow automobile horns which are heard everywhere. Everybody exchanges presents and good wishes. Offices, factories, banks and stores do not work on this day. Christmas is a religious holiday which symbolizes the birth of Jesus Christ. By this day people set fur trees in their houses and decorate them with toys and candies. Children wait for Santa Claus who comes to every house and brings them presents. Before going to bed, children leave their shoes to find in them what they want most of all the next morning. Some people like to celebrate the holiday in good companies, in restarants and cafes, but most people prefer to stay at home with the whole family on this day. The Thanksgiving Day is a kind of religious holiday too. It falls on the fourth Thursday in November. On this day people thank God for his goodness; besides, it marks the end of the harvest season on farms. It is a long-standing tradition to fry a large turkey for a festive meal on this day. Thanksgiving has been celebrated since the first harvest festival in America in the autumn of 1621.

My family and I live in a three - room flat in an apartment of twelve floors. Our flat is on the fifth floor. There are two bedrooms, a living - room, a kitchen, a hall, and a bathroom in it. There is a balcony, too.

My room is not too large. There is a sofa, a writing-table and a chair, several book-shelves with many books on them, and a wardrobe in the room. My room faces the South and is very light. The floor is covered with a carpet.

My parents' room is a bit larger; there are two beds, a big mirror and a little table. The living - room is large. There is a dining - table with six chairs, two cupboards, two armchairs and a sofa. There is a color TV - set, a tape recorder and a record - player. There are also several book-shelves. We have a few plants at the windows. We often invite guests to our place. Everybody agrees that our home is very nice and hospitable.
