Lincoln's birthday is celebrated every year on February, 12. Abraham Lincoln was the President during the Civil War (1861-1865). He led the fight to keep the nation together and to free the slaves. His life ended tragically. He was killed at the theatre during the performance soon after the victory of the North. In honour of this great man a beautiful memorial has been built in Washington.

Washington's Birthday is marked on February, 22. George Washington led the American Army to the victory in the War for Independence. Later he was elected the President of the United States and was in office for 8 years. The national capital of the United States, a state and several towns were named after George Washington.

One of the greatest holidays is the Independence Day. On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was signed. It proclaimed independence of thirteen British colonies from Great Britain. July, 4 has become the greatest holiday. In the past this day was marked with big parades and fireworks, but now it is celebrated more quietly. Cities and towns are decorated with flags on that day, there are parades on some places, but most people just go on picnics to the countryside. Labour Day is celebrated on the first Monday in September. On this day workers make a public show with marches, meetings, etc. It also marks the beginning of a school year and the end of summer.

London is the capital of Great Britain. It lies on the banks of the Thames River. The population of the city is over seven million. London is the biggest industrial and cultural centre of the United Kingdom. There are very many old buildings in London downtown. One of the oldest is the Tower, built in the eleventh century by William the Conqueror. Over the centuries the Tower served as a fortress, a residence of British kings, and even a prison. Another famous building is Saint Paul's Cathedral, a masterpiece of architecture. The Westminster Abbey is the place where nearly all kings and queens have been crowned, it is also a burial place where there are graves of many outstanding writers and poets, such as Dickens, Chaucer, Spencer, et cetera. The Houses of Parliament is the site of the British highest legislative body. Greater London consists of three main parts: the City, the West End, and the East End. The City is the most important commercial and financial centre of the country; there are banks and offices of the firms from all over the world, and over a million so-called white collars work there.

We sometimes watch films, read books or newspapers together. In the evening I speak to my friends on the phones. I usually sleep about eight hours a day, that is why I don t stay up too late. At eleven p.m. I take a shower, brush my teeth, and go to bed. As a rule I fall fast sleep at once.
