The current situation

Vladimir Putin and George Bush signed the Treaty on Strategic Offensive Reductions (SORT)

Mr. Bush and his assistants in the presidential campaign (2000) promised to the nation, they would stop the annoying and unproductive, they estimated that U.S. meddling in Russia's affairs in the Clinton era, which gave priority of Russia's integration into the global system of democratic of the free market economy.

("The International Herald Tribune", 29/01/2001)

After the collapse of USSR, the Russian Federation has declared itself successor to the Soviet Union, so that Russia inherited a permanent seat on the UN Security Council. American consultants have actively participated in the development of economic reforms, which meant Russian transition from a planned to a market economy. During the transition, the U.S. provided humanitarian aid to Russia (Operation «Provide Hope»). Relations between Russia and the U.S. have improved, but only for a short time.

The collapse of the Soviet Union, the economic, social and political crisis in Russia, the sharp decline of its international prestige and political-military capacity has led to the fact that the U.S. has become virtually the only world leader. Russia expected that with the dissolution of the Warsaw Pact, NATO will sooner or later also be broken up, especially since the U.S. government gave the assurance that the unit will not expand to the east. However, in 1999, NATO accepted the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary, and in 2004 - Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Bulgaria. This fact, as well as the U.S. operations and its allies against Yugoslavia, Afghanistan and Iraq have caused confusion in Russia about building relations with the U.S.. On the one hand, after the terrorist attack September 11, 2001 in the United States, Russia joined the anti-terrorist coalition, led by the United States in the hope that under the concept of "terrorism" can take and the actions of Chechen separatists, and thus obtain at least the tacit support of the West, on the other , June 13, 2002 is U.S. denounced the ABM Treaty of 1972, citing the need to protect against "rogue states."

In 2003 Russia, together with France and Germany, the de facto head "camp of disagreed" with the U.S. actions in Iraq. At the end of 2004 in Russian-American relations came unprecedented "cold snap" associated with the events in the Ukraine ("Orange Revolution").
