Siberian Federal University
Krasnoyarsk is one of the greatest educational centres in Siberia. There are a lot of institutions of higher education in our city, but the biggest and the most famous one is Siberian Federal University. The University is rather young. It was founded on the 28th of November, 2006. It has united some Krasnoyarsk universities into one huge educational organization. It was formed of four universities: Krasnoyarsk State University, Krasnoyarsk State Technical University, Krasnoyarsk State Architectural Academy, and State University of Non-Ferrous Metals and Gold.
The former Krasnoyarsk State Technical University is located in the so-called "Student town". It is the biggest higher educational institution of the city and it is considered the largest educational and scientific centre of Siberia and the Far East. Krasnoyarsk State Technical University was founded as a Polytechnical Institute in 1956. It had only 3 faculties with 300 students at that time. In 1994 it became a university. There were 13 faculties in the university.
At present there are nineteen Institutes in the modern SFU. Students can get degrees in 122 specialities and choose among 50 training courses at Siberian Federal University. There are three main departments: a full-time or a day-time department, an evening or a part-time department, a correspondence or an extramural department for those, who combine work and studies. According to the Bologna process bachelor's and master's degrees are introduced, so after graduation the students can get the bachelor's or master's degree, as well as become a specialist.
There is also a postgraduate department for those, who are engaged in research. The number of full-time students is more than 40 thousand. The teaching staff comprises a lot of Doctors of Sciences. The total number of teachers is more than 3 thousand. The SFU graduates are specialists in such fields as economics and management, philology, IT engineering, physics, chemistry, ecology, biology, etc. They work in Russia and abroad.
SFU has a lot of academic buildings. Many university buildings have special classrooms, well-equipped laboratories and workshops, resource centers, and libraries.
The university has 7 halls of residence. Living conditions for the students in halls of residence differ: not all the buildings are modern, clean and cozy. A huge university campus is being built now.
One of the 19 institutes of SFU is the Institute of Space and Information Technology. This institute has combined two former faculties of Krasnoyarsk State Technical University: the Faculty of Information and Control Processes and the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology.
There are ten sub-departments and 15 main specialties. With the modern equipment in 12 laboratories the students have great opportunities to carry out research work and its results are demonstrated at different conferences.
The graduates from the Institute of Space and Information Technology are specialists in the following fields: computer security, computer science, engineering, information systems and technologies, computer-aided design. High quality of education provides the graduates with good opportunities to rise to the top in their chosen professions. But they should remember that self-education is the way for them to stay at the top in this ever- changing world.
Siberian Federal University is dedicated to establish itself as a world class achievement-oriented university that undertakes to make a contribution to the development of Siberia.
