COURSE OUTLINE

COURSE SUMMARY

1.Aims

The aims of the course are as follows:

  • to help you improve your knowledge of English grammar;

  • to raise your awareness of how the English language works;

  • to provide practice in upper intermediate points of grammar;

  • to raise your awareness of the creative use of grammar;

  • to ensure that can communicate efficiently efficient with the grammar you learn;

  • to develop your ability to translate from Russian/Belarusian into English using appropriate grammar structures.

2.Content.

The areas of grammar studies will include the study of the English sentence (simple, composite and its major elements: the Subject and its ways of expressing, Verb Complementation patterns, Subject-Predicate agreement, Secondary parts of the sentence; also Oblique moods and Predicative complexes).

3.Learning outcome

  • to use English at a near-native level of grammatical competence;

  • to be able to speak on the use of grammar structures in English using appropriate examples;

  • to translate from Russian/Belarusian into English using different grammar structures;

  • to use the studied grammar structures in communicative situations;

  • to possess strategies for independent study, both individual and collaborative.

STUDENT ACTIVITY

The course treats you as adults responsible for you own learning as that is the only way you can progress. The course offers you different types of work:

— classroom activities (including discussions on difficult grammar points);

— learning independently using recommended books (that includes homework);

― writing self-check tests (at home)

— writing class tests embracing all the studied topics..

3.Course examination

Oral examination:

Part 1: Do a mini-test on the given grammar phenomenon.

Part 2: Analyse the grammar phenomena underlined in the passage.

Part 3: Translate from Russian into English using active grammar structures.
