American Virgins Review

Will Jesus Christ make it into the world of herpes? That is an argument that one of the supporters of the abstinence movement gives in favour of her principles in the programme American Virgins that also discusses the way sex education should be implemented in primary and secondary schools in the United States.

The programme spotlights one of such movements The Silver Ring Thing. It is a religious organization, based in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. The organization consists of a number of volunteers (including young virgins) who promote abstinence organizing different summits and events and making videos about teenage sexual disease epidemic. Children attending the events are given the Bible and a silver ring that is considered to be a kind of pledge to stay virgin until marriage and be constantly reminded about it. The organization is backed up by the Federal Government that has given millions of dollars to it.

Another community called Planned Parenthood is mentioned. It provides health care services and comprehensive sex education, believing that sex education is the only way to decrease the incidents of pregnancy among teenagers and sexually transmitted diseases.

During the debate between the head of Planned Parenthood, a paediatrician who considers comprehensive sex education to be an essential part of school education, calls attention of the audience to the drawbacks of the abstinence-only approach: it is fear-based and guilt-driven. She also mentions the hypocrisy behind the approach because there are also gay and transsexual kids in the class. Her opponent Miss America 2000 who proactively supports sex after marriage only tries to counterattack but other arguments than stopping STDs sound feeble from that side. The fact that the number of the diseases shot upwards after the sexual revolution of the 1960s and 1970s does not help much because it is the after-effects we have to deal with and not blame or find fault with things we can no longer change.

At the end of the day, while there is no guarantee that Jesus will make it in the world of herpes, one thing is known for sure. Abstinence only policy lets all the embittered, humiliated and fanatical losers express their anger, exercise aggression and spread hatred to all the dissidents with style, which is magnificently Puritan.

I think I understand the threat that sex before marriage poses in terms of spreading STDs however I do not think the abstinence-only approach is likely to make the problem go away, since sex education offers a better alternative. The problem of choice has been considered by many as one of the fundamental problems of humanity. What the organization The Silver Ring Thing is trying to do is to make a choice for you. To add insult to injury it is advocating it through aggression, fear and violence, which makes me, reject their offer. It seems that some of the members of this organization feel the same towards their activity, as for example that girl that didn’t look too enthusiastic about the stuff she tried to sell. Sell is also one of the key word here because the feeling that I got about the Thing is that it is about money. And about spreading hatred with the tax payers’ money. My attitude – yes to sex education!
