Rendering of the Article He Who Batters Loves?

The theme of the article He Who Batters Loves? is the issue of domestic violence.

The message is that there are many ways to deal with it for Russian women – one of the best is to contact the Moscow crisis centre ANNA.

The author begins the article by saying that domestic violence is a common problem in many families and it can happen over trifles.

Psychological support and personal security plan can be worked for domestic violence victims in the crisis centre ANNA. The hotline is available as well.

Counsellors of the centre recommend that in order to fight marital violence, the victim must asks the neighbours to call the police should any problems arise or go directly to the police department.

However, the author argues, asking the police to help might be tricky in Russia for a number of reasons: some police officers do not consider it a serious crime and it is difficult to put the articles on battering in the Russian Criminal Code into practice.

Alexandra Kareva who works at the centre assures women they will find all the necessary legal, medical and social help concerning the issue at the centre.

The author tells us domestic abuse takes place on different levels. The spouse can be deprived of freedom or get battered. Policemen’s wives are a special category of domestic violence victim because no bruises are left if the husband hits his wife and its impossible to prove it. Plus nobody at the police department would want to meddle in a family conflict.

The author is sorry about the fact that there are no official statistics on the issue in Russia, however, he or she adds, men make up the largest number of batters.

The author then continues that although the problem in the USA and Europe is at the same level the system of victim protection is much better developed there in terms of psychological, social and legal assistance.

Also the role of shelters is extolled since it is a great opportunity to break away from the husband.

Because human rights are much better protected abroad by means of legislation it is much easier to protect victims from marital violence. Counselling, inprisonment and prosecution of any violations help to fight domestic violence. In Russia, in contrast, divorce is the best solution.

The authors also mentions the American-Russian conference on the problem of spouse murder. And another problem that is mentioned is that very few men realise they are the source of domestic abuse, among the ones who call the hotlines at least. Marital rapes is also considered to be an issue.

The author concludes the article by saying that the principle Got married – so swallow! is still in effect in Russia and all those who need help desperately can contact the crisis centre ANNA.

I think that both parties are equally responsible for domestic abuse. It is up to each person to make up their own mind whether to live in peace or to wage wars. If everybody starts creating a healthy atmosphere within their own family then this world would be a better place to live. Laws can be effective but the most effective way is not to engage in domestic violence. Being a warrior or a fighter in the war against domestic violence will not make the issue go away, you will become a part of the hatred and the violence. It is worth supporting peace and friendliness I believe. Remember Gandhi and his ideas of nonviolence and how powerful they have been.
