1. Перепишите следующие предложения. Определите по грамматическим признакам, какой частью речи являются слова, оформленные окончаниями "s" и какую функцию это окончание выполняет, т.е. служит ли оно:

  1. а) показателем 3-го лица единственного числа глагола в Present Indefinite;

  2. б) признаком множественного числа имени существительного;

  3. в) показателем притяжательного падежа имени существительного.

Переведите предложения на русский язык.

  1. Oxford University consists of more than 30 colleges.

  2. Many famous scientists and writers studied in Cambridge.

  3. Scotland is Britain's largest shipbuilding centre.

II. Перепишите и переведите па русский язык следующие предложения, обращая внимание на перевод неопределенных и отрицательных местоимений some, any, no.

  1. Any student of our group reads English books without a dictionary.

  2. Does he know any foreign language?

  3. No student of that group presents at the meeting.

  4. There are some parks in London; the most famous of them is Hyde Park.

III. Перепишите следующие предложения и подчеркните в каждом из них модальный глагол. Переведите на русский язык.

  3. We should do it at once.

  4. These books may not be taken home.

IV. Перепишите следующие предложения и переведите их на русский язык, обращая внимание на разные значения глаголов to be, to have, to do.

  1. The students are to have their exams in winter.

  2. Scientists had to create new materials for different branches of industry.

  3. What do you know about the parks of London?

V. Перепишите следующие предложения, определите в каждом из них видо-временную форму и залог сказуемого. Переведите предложения на русский язык. В разделе (б) обратите внимание на перевод пассивных конструкций.

2. The scientist achieved great results in this branch of science.

3. We all know the works of this great Russian writer.

б) 1. This grammar rule is being discussed at the lesson today.

2. Books by Jack London are read by many readers with great interest.

3. Many books by American writers have been translated into Russian.

VI. Перепишите следующие предложения и переведите их на русский язык, обращая внимание на бессоюзное подчинение.

  1. I know he will graduate from the institute in two years.

  2. The dictionary I am speaking about contains sixty thousands words.

  3. We will read the paper you advised us to read.

  4. The work people do is called economic activity.

VII. Перепишите следующие предложения, подчеркните Participle I и Participle II и определите функцию каждого из них, т.е. укажите является ли оно определением, обстоятельством или частью сказуемого.

  1. We see a growing interest in the American literature and art among our young people.

  2. The city located on a river always attracted thousands of traders.

  3. He came up looking at me with interest.

  4. Having looked through all the papers (документы) and letters received on that day he left his office.

VIII. Прочитайте и устно переведите текст. Перепишите и письменно переведите 2 и 3 абзацы текста.

Oxford University

1. Oxford is a beautiful town on the river Thames about fifty miles from London. Some people say it is more beautiful than any other city in Britain.

2. Teaching existed at Oxford in some form in the 11th century and developed rapidly from 1167, when Henry II banned English students from attending the University of Paris. Nowadays, the university consists of thirty-nine colleges, independent and self-governing. Thirty colleges admit students for both undergraduate and graduate degrees, seven colleges are for graduates only, one college has Fellows only, and one, Kellogg College, specializes in part-time graduate and continuing education.

3. The term of studies lasts for 10 weeks, there are 3 terms in the Oxford academic year. Within the first week the freshman meets his tutor who tells the student about his plans, the lectures which he must take, about the requirements for the examinations which he will take. Attendance at lectures is not compulsory. Once a week each undergraduate goes to his tutor's room to read out an essay which he has written and discuss this essay with the tutor. At the beginning or end of each term the progress of the students is tested by the college examinations.

4. The students working hours are from 9 to 1. At 9 o'clock he sees his tutor or goes to the library, or attends lectures. From 2 to 5 he is engaged in sports and all kind of exercise. From 5 to 7 he works in the library or laboratory. At 7 o'clock they have dinner-time. After dinner the students have club activities, debating societies, etc. By 10 o'clock the student must be in the college, as most of students live in the colleges.

5. The doors are not opened to all. The majority of the students of Oxford are graduates of private schools, so Oxford University remains an aristocratic university to the present day.
