Use of the Past Participle

  • PerfectTenses

He has forgotten the pencil.

He had forgotten the pencil.

  • Passivvoice

A houseis built.

A housewas built.

  • Adjective

Look at the washed car.

  • Togetherwithotherwords

The car washed yesterday is blue.

He had his car washed.

3. Compounds with the past participle

This combination is also known as perfect participle. It is used to form an active sentence with the past participle. There is a time gap between the actions.

3.1. Past participle and having

  • Having read the book the boy came out of the room.

One action happened after the other.

3.2. Presentparticiple

  • The boy came reading out of the room.

Both actions happened at the same time.

Complete the sentences below using Participle II of the following verbs:

To do, to steal, to type, to look through, to redecorate, to assemble, to deliver, to move, to fix, to break, to examine, to add, to hear, to go, to take (2), to sign, to install, to alter, to kidnap, to fire.

> Pattern: I'd like all phone calls ... immediately.

I'd like all phone calls answered immediately.

1.      They found the door ... and the child ... , at least he was missing.

2.      I have my hair ... every week.

3.      I'll get you ... from the company.

4.  You won't have your tap ... by Monday.

5.      Where did you have those photos ... ?

6.      He had all his documents ... last week. He'll have to pay a lot for a new driving license and everything.

10.   They didn't want their letters ... , because they contained classified information.

11.   Tina had this dress ... , because she has put on a lot of weight recently.

13.   Everyone who makes such a statement should have his head ... .

14.   They had had their guest bedroom ... : the wallpaper was new and so was the white emulsion on the ceiling. Besides, he noticed that they had had a new washbasin… .

15.   Ron thought of what he could do if he inherited the money. Why, he could even have a new wing ... to his house.

16.   I'd like all the senior personnel... in my office.

17.   We have our newspapers.... We don't go to the newsagent's to buy them.

Milky Way Cake

1 bag small bars Milky Way or 6 large bars 1/2 c. butter

Combine candy bars and butter in medium saucepan and melt over low heat.

Batter:

1/2 c. butter 1/4 tsp. baking soda

2 c. sugar 1 1/4 c. buttermilk

4 eggs 1 tsp. vanilla

2 1/2 c. sifted flour 1 c. chopped nuts

Cream butter and sugar until mixture is light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add flour and melted candy, mixing well. Stir in vanilla and nuts. Pour into a greased and floured Bundt pan. Bake at 350° for 1 hour and 20 minutes. Cool a few minutes and remove from pan.
