Straightforward Intermediate Progress Test 3

Listening script

Track 11, Progress Test 3, Listening: Part 1

1

It’s difficult to say. I mean, when I was a toddler I must have had great fun, but I really don’t remember much. I remember being an adolescent, and I hated it. I just wanted to be an adult. But now, looking back on it, it was actually a fantastic age to be. Now I’m in my early forties I’m quite happy, and that’s because I have more experience. So, I’d have to say those teenage years were the best.

Woman 1: Mmm. Have you tried talking to her?

Woman 2: Yes, but she won’t listen.

Woman 1: Have you thought about leaving?

Woman 2: No, I couldn’t. I need the money too much.

Woman 1: It’s difficult, isn’t it? If I were you, I’d talk to someone else at work. Maybe she’s the same with everyone.

Earlier today the centre of London was brought to a stand-still. Traffic was stopped for an hour while a group of protesters sat in the middle of one of the busiest roads. The protesters were demonstrating against the arrest yesterday of two men who threw a cream pie at the Prime Minister. Four people were arrested and charged with disturbing the peace.

Adam: I don’t believe it! My car’s broken down again.

Ben: Oh that’s unlucky, Adam.

Adam: I know, Ben. And it’s going to cost me £200 to repair. I just don’t have enough money.

Ben: I wish I could lend you some, but I don’t get paid until Friday.

Adam: Don’t worry, I’ll manage. It’s just difficult getting to work.

Ben: Would you like me to pick you up in the morning?

Adam: Would you?

Ben: Sure. Eight o’clock?

I’m not a shopaholic, I just enjoy buying things. My husband thinks I’m crazy and he’s always complaining that I buy things I don’t need. I guess I spend about £100 a week on clothes, but he spends about the same amount on watching football and drinking beer!

Track 12, Progress Test 3, Listening: Part 2

Earlier today Simon Mckenzie was sentenced to four years in prison for robbing a bank. Unfortunately for Mr Mckenzie, it didn’t take the police long to catch him. Although he had worn a mask, jeans and a T-shirt, he gave the police one vital clue – his name and address.

On 15th March, Mr Mckenzie had driven up to the bank in his blue Ford Escort. He had put on his mask and walked into the bank where he had taken out a gun and pointed it at the cashier. He had then pushed a note across the counter that read, ‘This is a robbery. I want £10,000. Put the money in a bag and pass it across the counter.’

The cashier followed the instructions and gave Mr Mckenzie the money. He then left the bank but forgot to take the note. When the police arrived, they noticed that the note was written on the back of an envelope. When they turned the envelope over they were surprised to find Mr Mckenzie’s name and address written on the envelope.
