The Russian Federation
The Russian Federation is the largest country in the world. It occupies about one-seventh of earth’s surface. It covers the eastern part of Europe and the northern part of Asia. Its total area is about 17 million square kilometers. The country is washed by 12 seas of 3 oceans: the Pacific, the Arctic and the Atlantic. In the south Russia borders on China, Mongolia, Korea, Kazakhstan, Georgia and Azerbaijan. In the west it borders on Norway, Finland, the Baltic States, Byelorussia, and the Ukraine. It also has a sea-border with the USA.
There is a hardly country in the world with very different relief. We have steppes in the south, plains and forests in the midland, tundra and taiga in the north, highlands and deserts in the east. There are several mountain chains on the territory of the country: the Urals, the Caucasus, the Altai and others. The largest mountain chain, the Urals, separates Europe from Asia.
There are over two million rivers in Russia. Most known are the Volga, the Ob, the Yenisei, the Lena, and the Amur.
Russia has one-sixth of the world’s forests. They are concentrated in the European north of the country, in Siberia in the Far East.
On the territory of the country there are various types of climate, from arctic in the north to subtropical in the south. In the middle of the country the climate is continental.
Russia is very rich in oil, coal, iron ore, natural gas, copper, nickel and other mineral resources.
Russia is a parliamentary republic. The head of state is the president, who elected for 4 years by direct popular vote. The legislative powers are exercised by the Duma.
The capital of Russia is Moscow. It’s its largest political, scientific, cultural and industrial centre. In is one of the oldest Russian cities.
About myself
Hello let me introduce myself. My name is Olga, I’m 19 years old. I’m from Smolensk, when I live since my birth, which is 11th may.
I can say that I was born in highly happy family. I think so, because my parents live together more then 25 years. I’m not the only child in family; I have an older sister Kate. Besides at home I have very funny fat red cat called Christopher.
What can I say about my appearance and character? Well, I’m highly tall, good-looking girl with dark hair and hazel eyes. As I said, I was born in May and I’m a Taurus, which determines my character. My friends say that I’m honest, sincere person with good manners, good sense of humor, very friendly and in common devoted friend. I’m highly polite. And besides I’m very romantic and sensitive person. I can say that I’m quite clever, but very lazy person and it’s my very negative trait.
Two years ago I graduated from school, which was an Esthetic Gymnasia, when I have had good humanitarian education. Except usual subjects I studied technique of theater, choreography, music, different foreign languages. Since 8 years I studied to play the violin, and in 15 years I finished the musical school.
So, two years ago I graduated from school and entered the Mendeleyev University of Chemical Technology. And now I’m a second-year student of that university and I like it.
Moscow
Moscow, the capital of Russia, is the largest city of the country. The history of Moscow is connected with the history of Russia. It was first mentioned in the records dated to the year 1147.
Nowadays, Moscow is a political, administrative, economical, educational and cultural centre of country.
The centre of the city and the historical heart of Moscow is the Kremlin. Along the east wall of the Kremlin lays Red Square, the ceremonial center of the capital. Besides there we can see the Cathedral of St.Vasil the Blessed and the State Historical Museum.
Moscow is an industrial centre too. There are many factories and plants there.
Moscow has a large concentration of educational institutions. Moscow State University is the leading one. Among the specialized educational centers are the Moscow Timiryasev Academy of Agriculture and the Mendeleyev University of Chemical Technology.
Theatre, music and art are important in the city’s life too. The State Academic Bolshoi Theatre, Mali Theatre, Moscow Art Theatre is world famous.
There are many places of interest in Moscow. The city is famous for its historical monuments, museums, art galleries and theatres. The State Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts and the State Tretyakov Picture Gallery are a source of nation-wide pride.
Transport… Moscow is a very big city and its transport must be comfortable and fast. One can see a lot of cars, trolleybuses and trams on the streets of the city. But the most using is Moscow Underground. Besides in Moscow there are 9 railway stations and 4 airports around it.
Moscow is very well-developed and beautiful city and Muscovites really proud of it.
