LESSON ONE

WILLIAMSOMERSETMAUGHAM (1874 - 1965)

W. S. Maugham was born in Paris in the family of the solicitor at the British Embassy. His parents died when he was still a child and he was brought up by his uncle, vicar in Kent, one of the English counties.

Maugham was educated at King's School in Canterbury and at Heidelberg University in Germany. In Germany he received his medical degree. When he was an undergraduate he had to work as a practitioner in London slums. He combined the work with writing his diploma research. This experience gave him the material for his first novels "Lisa of Lambeth" (1897) and "Of Human Bondage" (1915). The former was not success. The latter also passed unnoticed in the years of World War I, and it was Theodore Dreiser who called public attention to its merits in 1919 thus giving it a new life. Glory was brought to Maugham by his first play "Lady Frederic" and the next plays of his were performed all over the world. Maugham's novel "The Moon and the Sixpence" ("Луна и грош") (1919) tells the story about a man of genius who devoted himself entirely to painting. His other famous novels include "The Painted Veil" ("Разрисованный занавес") (1925), "Cakes and Ale" ("Пироги и пиво") (1930), "Theatre" ("Театр") (1937).

Maugham is an excellent dramatist and a short story writer. In his lifetime he published more than ten collections of stories. All of them demonstrate the author's immaculate mastery of the form. His fiction has little romance or idealism. The main idea expressed in it is that human nature is unpredictable, that people are usually full of contradictions, that the nature of a man's heart and mind is mysterious. The works by Maugham being exquisite in style are greatly appreciated by foreign students of English. His books abound in various stylistic devices, irony being most widely spread among them.

The characters created by Maugham often resemble his readers someone from their acquaintances and thus his books are viewed to be instructive. The language of the author is considered to be the best guide or "life encyclopedia" for everybody who wants to master the English language up to the level of proficiency.
