James Cushat-Prinkey gets an inheritance and the female part of his family wants him to get married. They insist on Joan Sebastable. On his way to Joan's house, James relizes that he is going to arrive just in time for the afternoon tea. However, he does not want to go through this unpleasant ceremony, so he stops by the house of his remote cousin Rhoda Ellam. He has a great time there, so he asks her to be his wife. They get married, but at the end Cushat-Prinkley gets what he hates most - namely, afternoon tea ceremonies.

The atmosphere of the story is satiric and sceptical. The author represents the main character's attitude to females in an ironical way comparing women with the Alps. He also uses simile to describe the female part of Cushat-Prinkley's family - he calls them "unexercised terriers".

Most of the time Cushat-Prinkley does not know what he wants, that is why he lets his female relatives to choose a wife for him. When he suddenly realizes what he wants, it is almost too late, but he tries to change the situation. As it appears later, everything was in vain, because women are all the same, everyone likes ceremonies. It occures to him, probably, that he should have been choosing better, but now it IS too late. So, for me the idea of the story is that you have to take care of yourself and not let other people think for you.

Here Saki derides women and meaningless conventionalities of the Edwardian society.
