The text is about relationship between two people, two brothers. They both grew up in a problem district of New York, where everyone is unlikely to have a bright future. One of them, the narrator, could escape the trap of Harlem. He managed to avoid being gripped into the world of drugs, guns, and ex-prisoners. The other, Sonny, was a good, gentle boy as a kid, but he couldn’t escape the trap of ghetto. Sonny became a drug addict. One day he was arrested for dealing and using heroin.

Sonny's brother was disappointed in his younger brother. He laid his hopes on Sonny and couldn't face him going down, coming to nothing. Just after the death of his daughter, after loosing one more hope, the narrator could bring himself to write Sonny. When ex-prisoner came back to New York, his brother brought him home. The narrator's family warmly welcomed Sonny. But his brother couldn't decide whom he was looking at: the same wild, but good baby brother or the drug addict and ex-prisoner. Thinking about Sonny in that way he felt not aversion or fear, but pity and anxiety. He wondered if prison had become Sonny's way out of the trap.

2.6 (a)

- “His face had been bright and open and he had wonderfully direct brown eyes, and great gentleness and privacy. I wondered what he looked like now”

- “I didn't want to believe that I would ever face my brother going down, coming to nothing...”

- “Then I kept in constant touch with him I sent him whatever I could and I went to meet him when he came back to New York.”

- “This was because I have begun, finally, to wonder about Sonny, about the life Sonny lived inside.”

- “I was remembering and it made it hard to catch my breath, that I had been there when he was born; and had heard the first words he had ever spoken.”

- “And thank God she was there, for I was filled with that icy dread again. (…) I was trying to remember everything I had heard about dope addiction and couldn't help watching Sonny for signs. I wasn't doing it out of malice. I was trying to find out something about my brother. I was dying to hear him tell me he was safe.”

2.8 (3)

The moment Sonny and I started into the house I had the feeling that I was simply bringing him back into the danger he had almost died trying to escape ”

Every one has its own way, but it always starts at one point – childhood. Family, home, friends, neighborhood play the most important role in a future life shaping. Just our experience and first impressions are in our core. As for Sonny, his childhood led to unfortunate results. He became a drug addict and went down. Bringing his brother home, the narrator is afraid of starting the story from the very beginning.

“ To hit” can be used as: “to strike”, “to touch”, “to find” and “to get to”. In the text it is used in the last meaning. The phrase “hit 110th street” means “got to 110th street”.

The word “vivid” has several different meanings. They are: “bright”, “blazing”, “lifelike” and “clear”. Here the word “vivid” is used in the expression “vivid killing streets” in the meaning of “lifelike” as oxymoron.

The meanings of the word “anxious” are close in sense: “uneasy”, “troubled”, “afraid”. But with infinitive following (“anxious to do smth”) it has the meaning “to look forward to”. Just in that sense it is used in the text.
