Higher Education in Russia

In Russia a young man or a young girl can become a student of a state university only if he (or she) passes competitive entrance examinations. If you are not very successful but can pay tuition fees the university may accept you. But if you are a failure you can try again next year.

The University is a completely autonomous body, governed by its own laws. The faculties select their own undergraduates and elect their teachers and heads. There are two departments at our University: a full-time department and a part-time department (a correspondent department). The students of the University are usually called undergraduates; first-course (-year) students are called freshmen. There are also graduates and postgraduates who continue their studies at the University. To enter the University an applicant must pass the entrance examinations successfully.

The term of training at our University is 5 years. The University organizes academic activities, provides accommodation and entertainment. Each faculty of the University provides a programme of compulsory lectures and seminars, organizes lectures and seminars, arranges examinations and gives degrees. But within each faculty there is a system of options. An undergraduate chooses a course of lectures and undertakes some research work. He presents the results of his work at a weekly seminar. Here the teacher and his students discuss every undergraduate's paper. There are many highly qualified experts to give our students professional specialization and provide them with general and cultural education. They plan the students' work and check it.

There is a Students' Science Society at the University. The Society brings together those students who do regular research work. Many undergraduates of the University are members of the Society. They hold conferences and publish students' papers.

The students' life is very active. After classes our students attend sports societies, choirs, and folk song and dance ensembles. At our University there are several sports grounds and sports halls and a stadium. Undergraduates have an ample opportunity to display their talents in different sports. Some of them regularly present the University at national and international competitions.

They say that now education is the best investment because if you have had good training you can always find an interesting and well-paid job and thus get a good return on your original investment. Unfortunately, Russian education faces a lot of problems. One of them is low funding. Many school teachers and university lecturers are underpaid. Universities have no money for laboratory equipment and materials. This is a political question. If we want our country to be among well-leveled states we should pay more attention to education. This is the future of the country.
