Assignment 8. Group the set expressions according to their con­notation: a) positive; b) negative:

to wash one's dirty linen in the public выносить сор из избы, to keep in the pin Сленг: воздерживаться от пьянства, to take leave of one's senses [идиома] сойти с ума; потерять рассудок. , to kick the bucket умереть сыграть в ящик, to look like a thousand dollars  прекрасно выглядеть;, to call names осыпать бранью. , to lend a helping hand протянуть руку помощи , to flog a dead horse заниматься бесполезным делом, , to miss the boat  упустить шанс, упустить возможность, "опоздать на поезд", to pull the wool over someone's eyes обманывать, вводить в заблуждение., leaves without figs пустые обещания, to bring home the bacon зарабатывать на жизнь, обеспечивать семью 2. преуспеть, добиться успеха. , a wet night  попойка, to bury the tomahawk заключить мир  , the iron in one's soul  быть опечаленным, грустить, тосковать, alive and kicking жив и здоров.  .

Assignment 9. Explain the meaning of the following set expres­sions and choose two synonyms for each of them from those men­tioned below:

a) to eat the fat of the land изобилие; b) to fish in the air  толочь воду в ступе ,бесполезная работа; c) to come off cheap дёшево отделаться:

to seek a hare in a hen's nest пытаться сделать невозможное, to roll in luxury  жить в роскоши , to sow the sand беспокоить зря , приложить усилия напрасны , to get off with a whole skin выйти сухим из воды , to live in a bed of roses жизнь прожить-не поле перейти, to get unscathed out of the battle выходить сухим из воды .

Assignment 11. Indicate each set expression as belonging to one of the following kinds according to the vocabulary layer: 1) archaism; 2) poeticism; 3) barbarism; 4) bookish expression; 5) colloquialism; 6) jargonism:

a) proud seaвздымающееся море.  ; b) Achilles heel; c) ask me another Спросите что-нибудь полегче! ; d) a la mode; e) mon­key's allowance уст.жарг.≈ побои вместо платы; f) at adventure опрометчиво.

Assignment 12. Group separately phraseological units contain­ing: a) metaphor; b) metonymy:

the weaker vessel бренное существо - жінка; all ears - дуже уважний; an old hand -досвідчена людина; old fox - стара лисиця, хитрун; blue bonnet - шотландець; to count noses - лічити голоси; queer fish - дивак; slow coach -тупуватий, відсталий.

Assignment 13. Point out of the following: 1) cliches; 2) proverbs пословицы; 3) sayings поговорки; 4) epigrams/ aphorisms; 5) quotations цитаты; 6) allusions аллюзии:
