  1. What is early childhood caries

Early childhood caries (ECC) is an infectious with the constant pain of decayed teeth and swollen gums disease that can happen in any family.

  1. What are its basic causes?

  • ECC is a transmissible disease because bacteria present in the parent's or caregiver's mouth are passed to the child.

  • If a baby sleeps with a bottle, the chances of decay are greater.

  • Untreated tooth decay in children results in pain and infection.

  • Rampant caries may be seen in individuals with xerostomia, poor oral hygiene, stimulant use (due to drug-induced dry mouth), or large sugar intake If rampant caries is result of previous radiation to the head and neck, it may be described a as radiation- induced caries.

  • Problems can also be caused by the self destruction of roots and whole tooth resorption when new teeth erupt or later from unknown causes.

Tooth decay, by the self destruction of roots and whole tooth resorption, break teeth, brittle tooth, rotten tooth.

  1. What children are more commonly ill with ECC?

  • ECC is common among families of lower socioeconomic status.

  • ECC is more common among particular ethnic groups, in those families who have limited access to dental care, are in areas where water fluoridation is lacking.

  • ECC is also more common among children with special needs

Prevention

Many children with severe ECC must be hospitalized for treatment, and this can be very expensive.

Early childhood caries can be prevented by providing appropriate education for parents and oral health-care for the child
