Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT)

Exam Format and Scoring

The exam is a Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) which means that the questions are not preset, and will not be exactly the same as for someone else taking the test. Instead, they are selected from 'pools' of questions of various types, depending on your previous answers. The basic principle is that the first question that you are asked in each section is one of medium difficulty - if you answer correctly, you will receive a medium score and your next question will be harder and will carry a higher score. If you answer incorrectly, you will be asked an easier question that carries a lower score.

When you finish the test your unofficial scores will be displayed onscreen. These are made up of:

Total score: which will be between 200 and 800.

Verbal score: between 0 and 60

Quantitative score: between 0 and 60

As you leave you, will be given a printed copy of these results.

Several weeks later, you will receive your official scores from ETS in the mail, which will be confirmation of the 3 scores above plus your Analytical Writing score, which will be between 1 and 6.

GMAT Sections

The GMAT consists of three sections:

Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) - 2 essays required, with 30 minutes available to write each

Quantitative Section - 37 maths questions, with 75 minutes available

Verbal Section - 41 English language questions with 75 minutes available

It is possible to take a five-minute break between each section. Overall you should allow up to 4 hours for your GMAT.
