COVER LETTERS
The CV doesn’t stand alone. Cover letters are its essential partners. A cover letter is your chance to convince the employer that you ought to be interviewed. Employers read cover letters carefully, searching for clues and information on which to base their decisions. There are three types of cover letters:
1.Invited (You’re sending it because you’ve seen something in the advertisement that interests you)
2.Uninvited (The company didn’t advertise any openings, but you know they admit applications)
3.Referral (The most useful. It is characterized by the first line which reads as
“Dr Smith suggested that I should apply for…”)
A standard form for the cover letter is:
First paragraph: Introduce yourself. Identify position you’re applying for.
Dear Miss Hiromoto
My name is…
I am writing to you to express my interest in…
Tell why you’re writing in such a way as to arose the employer’s interest. You must grab the employer’s attention.
Second paragraph: Briefly describe your professional and/or academic qualifications. Draw on the power of your resume and refer to it – better yet, expand on it. Avoid trite phrases, such as “as you will note in my enclosed
45
resume”. If you’re short on job experience, mention extracurricular activities, especially examples of leadership, special projects you worked on.
Third paragraph: Relate yourself to the company. Provide details as to why you should be considered. Use this paragraph to show off your research on the company and the industry.
Fourth paragraph: Request action. Ask for an interview appointment. Suggest dates on which you’re available. Tell the employer that you will call to make an appointment. It’s a lot harder for the employer to ignore a request for action than a wishy – washy “call me if you are interested” approach.
Before closing: Thank the prospective employer for his or her time and consideration.

Referral Cover Letter
92Queens Boulevard Bayside, New York 11202
June 15, 200…
Ms. Loretta Vasquez
The Vasquez Travel Agency
1423 Broadway
New York 10667
Dear Ms. Vasquez:
This month I completed a two-year course of study in Travel and Tourism at the Bowker Business Institute, and my placement counselor, Mr. Robert Feiner, suggested I apply to you for a position as assistant travel agent.
As you will see from my enclosed resume, I have taken courses in nearly every aspect of the travel industry. I have participated in workshops simulating computer and telephone operations, and I have had extensive practice in ticketing and reservations.
My work experience, moreover, has helped me develop an ability to deal with the public, a valuable asset for a travel agency. Not only as a sales assistant, but even as a stock clerk, I have learned to be customer oriented: I have found that courtesy and a smile keep business flowing smoothly.
I would like very much, Ms. Vasquez, to put my skills to work for your travel agency. I am available for an interview Monday through Friday during business hours. You can reach me at 123-8895.
Yours truly,
Exercise 1.
Choose one of the advertisements and imagine you’re a candidate for the post.
Make a list of qualifications and personal qualities that are required to do the job. Design your CV and write a cover letter.
