3. Read and translate general guidelines for user manuals. What steps can be added?

Make sure the instructions actually map on to the product in all respects.

Include a one-page quick start guide.

Present instructions as step-by-step procedures.

Tell the user what functions there are, and what they are for – not just how to use them...

...but avoid marketing waffle (they already bought the product!)

Ensure that the writers are part of the product design team.

Make sure the writers have the product, understand the product, and actually use the product as they write.

Consider the needs of disabled users (i.e., low vision, colour-blind) and provide alternative manuals in Braille, large print, audio etc.

User-test the product and the user manual with real users (including disabled

users).

4. Write instructions for use of some home appliance. Don’t give the name of the appliance, your fellowmates will read and guess.

Unit 7. Publicistic Style and Oratorical Substyle. Speeches

1. Go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vDWWy4CMhE and listen to the famous speech by Martin Luther King “I Have a Dream”. What is the goal of the speech? How does the speaker structure his address to convey the message to the audience?

2. Explain which parts of utterances are repeated using examples in the right column:

Syntactical stylistic devices

1.

Anaphora

A.

а… . а… . а… .

2.

Epiphora

B.

… а. … а. … а.

3.

4.

Anadiplosis (catch repetition)

D.

5.

Anadiploses (chain repetition)

E.

3. Which syntactical stylistic devices (repetitions) are used in the examples below?

A great desire of peace – peace of no matter what kind – swept through them. Supposing he was there. Supposing he did it.

To behave in this way would be to slight a lady, to slight a lady would be to be deficient in chivalry, and chivalry is a part of my character.

I wake up and I am alone. I walk around the village and I am alone.

He ran away from the battle. He was an ordinary human being, so he ran away from the battle.

4. Give definitions of parallelism and chiasmus using the examples of these syntactical stylistic devices in the right column:

Parallelism

He was soft. He was foolish.

The seeds you sow –

Another reaps.

The robes you wear –

Another wears.

Chiasmus (reversed

parallel construction)

Down dropped the breeze, the sails dropped down.

5.Look at the examples below, what can speakers use rhetoric questions

for:

What am I? A simple worker. What was I before? Nothing.

6. Match the types of lexico-syntactical stylistic devices and the examples. Give definitions of the stylistic devices and translate the examples:

Some lexico-syntactical stylistic devices

1. Climax

A. Some people have much to live on and little to live for.

discover everything – except obvious.

7. Match the three pillars of public speaking with their explanations using arrows:

Ethos

Pathos

Logos

Credibility of the speaker, or ethical appeal to the audience

Logical argument

Appeal to the emotions of the audience

8. Read the address below delivered by U.S. President F.D. Roosevelt. When did he deliver the speech? Carry out the stylistic pre-translation analysis of the speech, mark types of information using +, ++, -:

Pearl Harbor Address to the Nation

Mr. Vice President, Mr. Speaker, Members of the Senate, and of the House of Representatives:

Yesterday, December 7th, 1941 -- a date which will live in infamy -- the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.

The United States was at peace with that nation and, at the solicitation of Japan, was still in conversation with its government and its emperor looking toward the maintenance of peace in the Pacific. …

It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time, the Japanese government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

… Yesterday, the Japanese government also launched an attack against Malaya. Last night, Japanese forces attacked Hong Kong.

Last night, Japanese forces attacked Guam.

Last night, Japanese forces attacked the Philippine Islands. Last night, the Japanese attacked Wake Island.

And this morning, the Japanese attacked Midway Island. …

As Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy, I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense. But always will our whole nation remember the character of the onslaught against us.

25

No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory.

I believe that I interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost, but will make it very certain that this form of treachery shall never again endanger us.

Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our people, our territory, and our interests are in grave danger.

With confidence in our armed forces, with the unbounding determination of our people, we will gain the inevitable triumph -- so help us God.

I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, December 7th, 1941, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese empire.

9. What stylistic devices are used in the address above? Give examples.

10. Give examples of detachments (e.g. He tried – but all in vain). What is the role of detachments in the speech?

used.
