# 5 Christmas
Christmas is a Christian holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ.
It is the happiest and busiest time of the year.
Christmas is celebrated on the 25th of December.
Homes are decorated with Christmas trees. and ornaments.
City streets are filled with colored lights; the sound of bells.
Christmas carols can be heard everywhere.
Children write letters to Santa Claus and tell him what presents they would like to get.
Many department stores hire people to wear a Santa Claus costume and listen to children’s requests.
People send cards to relatives and friends.
A Christmas tree is one of the main symbols of Christmas in most homes.
Presents are placed under the tree.
On Christmas Eve or Christmas morning families open their presents
Children believe that Santa Claus arrives on Christmas Eve in a sleigh pulled by a reindeer and brings presents.
Some children hang up stockings and Santa Claus fill them with candy, fruit and small gifts.
Some people walk from house to house and sing Christmas carols.
Sometimes they are given money or small gifts.
Many people attend church services on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning.
They listen to reading from Bible and singing Christmas carols.
Traditional Christmas dinner consists of stuffed turkey, mashed potatoes,.and variety of other dishes.
Pumpkin pie, plump pudding, and fruitcake are favourite desserts.
Books
I think we can’t live without books.
I consider that books are with us during all our life,
They appeared ages ago and took different forms.
The oldest form of books, a role, appeared in Ancient Egypt.
Paper was invented in China.
The books were copied by hand and cost very much.
Later the printed press was invented.
There are many genres of books around us.
They can be divided into fiction and non-fiction books.
I prefer to read adventure books.
My favourite books are adventure ones.
My favourite book is “Robinson Crusoe” by Daniel Defoe.
The novel was written in 1719.
This novel is prais to human labour and the triumph of man over natire.
Defoe shows the development of his hero.
At the beginning of the story we see inexperienced youth..
Then he becomes a strong-willed man.
Robinson was an optimist.
He had confidence in himself and in man.
He has overcome all difficulties.
He teaches people how to live, he tries to teach what’s good and what’s bad.

4. Isaac Newton is one of the greatest men in the history of science. 5. He was born in a little village in the middle of the 17th century. 6. He studied Math at Cambridge University. 7. Newton's contribution to physics astronomy and math is great. 8. He may be considered the founder of the mordent mathematics and physics. 9. He discovered the law of motion and the universal law of gravitation. 10. He studded the nature of light and colour. 11. Newton came to the conclusion that white colour consists of many different colours known as spectrum. 12. He died when he was 84 and was burred at Westminster Abbey.
13. Charles Darwin was born in the beginning of the 19th century. 14. He was a great biologist. 15. He created a new theory of evolution. 16. Once there were only simple organisms living in the seas. 17. For hundreds millions of years they have developed to produce all the different kinds of animals and plants we know today.
18. Michael Faraday was born at the end of the 17th century. 19. He was interested in electricity very much and spent long months studying this strange force. 20. He opened many laws of electricity and magnetism.
21. Lord Rutherford is the great pioneer of nuclear physics. 22. He received the Nobel Prize in 1908. 23. Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin in 1929.
Friendship
1.A person can’t live in isolation.

Sometimes she is short of time to do her housework.
I often help her about the house.
She taught me a lot of useful things: to clean the house, to sew, to cook a lot of tasty dishes
My father’s name is I.P. He is 42.
He works very much because he is responsible for well-being of our family.
My brother is 9. He studies in the same school as me.
I often take care of him, when parents are busy.
I think our family is friendly.
We try to discuss the family problems together.
I like family holidays most of all.
Our favourite holidays are birthdays and the 8th of March.
We always give presents to each other.
On the 8th of much our mother is always given flowers. Her favourite flowers are roses.
We try to do everything together before a holiday.: to buy food, to clean the flat, to lay the table.
As any family we have some problems.
My parents are upset when I get bad marks. I am glad that it happens not very often.
As many teenagers there is some misunderstanding.

They don’t like all my friends and think that I talk to much on the phone.
Sometimes the problem of fashion appears.
My parents try to buy me clothes according to their taste.
They don’t like music I listen to.
But never the less I never had a moment’s unhappiness.

Television is a branch of mass media.
It appeared much later than newspapers, magazines, radio,
There are a lot of channels on TV.
You can choose any according to your taste.
Many people watch TV just to relax.
Others watch TV to be informed about the latest Russian or World News.
TV gives us opportunities for education
Small children adore watching cartoons.
Grown ups prefer to watch films.
It is very convenient.
You don’t need to go to the cinema and book tickets.
People don’t have a chance to watch great sport competitions, but on TV.
Many people like to watch their favourite singers on TV.
Tickets on the concert are rather expensive, so TV helps many to do it.
But there are some disadvantages of TV too.
Many people spend a lot of time in front of television screen.
It is very bad for their sight.
Schoolchildren often spend all free time watching TV instead of doing homework.
People who spend too much time in front of TV- sets are called “coach potatoes”
It’s more useful to meet friends, to do sports.
So TV has some advantages and disadvantages.
