1. Had Kitty changed her mind about Charles after the talk with Waddington? Why?
2. Waddington said to Kitty: “You and I are the only people here who walk quite quietly and peaceably on solid ground. The nuns walk in heaven and your husband – in darkness.” Comment the phrase. How does it explain new relation between Waddington and Kitty? What role did Waddington played in Kitty’s life at that time? How does this phrase characterise Walter?
3. Remember the scene with a fresh green salad. Why did Waddington call it a suicide? Why Kitty and Walter ate salad every night? Why had Walter said that his wife liked it?
4.Describe the scene with the dead Chinese beggar. Dwell upon its symbolic significance.
