Personality

Some of us seem to be very kind, while the others seem to look down on everyone around them. Some of us never forget an argument, while the others put up and forgive easily. As we grow up, our personality develops and we find that we get on with certain people more than with others. Who we are seems to have a large genetic element, but is also influenced by those who to look down. If we make up to our parents or other family members, we may want to be like them. On the other hand, if our parents seem to put us down all the time and we fall out with them a lot, then, perhaps, we will develop quite a different personality.

Ex. 23. Read the article and explain the highlighted words with the help of a dictionary. Tick the words and expressions connected with the day and night routines.

Night & Day

Every ‘morning‘, Mission Control wakes the astronauts with music at exactly 6:41 pm CST (Central Standard Time – that’s the same time that people in

Chicago use). The pieces of music are always different. After that, they wash, have breakfast and get ‘morning messages’ from Mission Control. Washing is not easy in space, and it’s impossible to have a shower, so the crew wash themselves with a wet sponge. Shaving is also a difficult task, and men use special ‘space’ razors.

At around 8:45 the astronauts start work. Most of the time they work on projects for the shuttle itself. They also take photos of their activities and the view from the shuttle to send home. Each day there are also two six-hour space walks. The crew take a short break for lunch during the ‘afternoon’. According to NASA, the crew’s special meals are tasty and very good for them. After lunch, they go back to work until around 8:45 am CST.

In the evening they all have a couple of hours to have dinner and relax. Most of them read and send their personal e-mail in free time. They like to read books or listen to the music. Sometimes they admire the Earth and the stars. At exactly 10:41am CST, it’s time for the crew to go to bed, while Mission Control and the shuttle’s computers take over for the ‘night’.

Reading

Ex. 25. Read the text and a) define the main idea of it. Do you feel a bit of sad humor in it?

What’s in name?

Your name is extremely important. It’s how you identify yourself. It’s how people identify you.

In the past, parents named their children after important family relatives. Nowadays, parents do not want to call their little daughter after their grandmother.

It’s fashionable to choose names of places for children’s name. For example,

Madonna named her daughter Lourdes after the town of France, as well as Victoria Beckham who named their first child Brooklyn after an area in New York.

Some people name their children after famous personalities. Leonardo DiCaprio’s parents named him after the great Italian painter Leonardo da Vince. A few years ago names Beyonce and Britney were very popular.

Some names have special meanings. Do you know that actor Keanu Reaves’ name means ‘cool breeze over mountains’ in Hawaiian?

A recent survey showed that people with unusual or original names feel special. I wonder if this is true for Bruce Willis and Demi Moore’s children: Rumer Glenn,

Scout Larue ad Tallulah Belle.

As for me, I’m going to call my daughter Lauren. Why? Simply, because I like this name, my mother likes this name too, but unfortunately she named me Enid Blodwen after my grandmother.
