The typical English house

The Clarks live in a two-storeyed house in North West London. The house is a pleasant-looking building that stands off the main road. There is a traditional garden at the back of the house and there is a hedge in front of it. The garden is surprisingly small with an apple-tree in the centre, two cherry trees next to it, and a tiny lawn under them. There is a narrow path with gaily-coloured roses along it.

Inside the house there is an entrance-hall with a carpeted staircase. The door at the end of the hall leads to the study. Here there is a sofa and a writing table placed against the window. There are a lot of books in the study. Two walls are entirely lined with bookcases. They are full of books, newspapers, journals and magazines. There are a couple of comfortable easy chairs near the fireplace.

Living-room looks a bit overcrowded with furniture. There is a big deep sofa, a round table, a sideboard and a piano. In the corner stands a large TV set with a bowl of flowers on it. There are some paintings on the walls. There is a thick carpet on the floor and light pink curtains on the window. The curtains on the window match the wall-paper. There is a fireplace with a mantelpiece above it.

Opposite the drawing- room is a small dining-room. There is practically nothing in it except for a large dining-table in the middle of the room, some chairs round the table and a sideboard full of cups, saucers and plates. The kitchen is next to the dining-room. It is conveniently arranged. It has an electric cooker, a double-sink unit, a dish-washer, a microwave, build-in cupboards and a table that folds against the wall when not in use. There is a fridge near the kitchen-table. You can see many plants in the kitchen. They are everywhere – on the window sill, on the walls, on the fridge.

Upstairs there are the bedrooms which are quite simply furnished There isn’t much furniture in it, only the most necessary. Each bedroom has got a bedside table by the bed with a lamp on it, a wardrobe and the chest of drawers. There is a spare bedroom for the guests.

The bathroom is the sort you expect to find in many homes – green tiles, a mirror, a bath with a shower, a washbasin, and a shelf for soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste. The bathroom is small and not very light as there is only one window in it.

The Clarks like their house very much. And I like the old English saying: ″My home is my castle″.

Activity 9.

Step 1. Read the following text about the types of dwellings in Britain and the USA.

Type of dwelling depends on climate, family income and weather you live in a city or in the country side.

In Ukraine the most common type of accommodation is a flat in a block of flats. A block of flats is a multi-storied building with all modern conveniences and it is not very expensive. Many people in our country also have summer houses which can be different. Common people usually have a single-storey wooden of brick house but wealthy people can afford to build a two-storey or even three-storey cottage.

In the West people dream to have a detached house. This is a house for one family and it is rather expensive. There are about 23 million homes (houses and flats) in Britain. Sixteen million families live in their own homes. Five million people rent their homes (accommodation) from local councils and two million live in private rented houses.

A typical British house is for a family of two to four people. There are other houses next to it and opposite it, and there is a garden at the back and another at the front. A typical house has got two floors. On the ground floor there is a sitting room and a kitchen. On the first floor there is a bathroom and the bedrooms.

If people do not earn enough money to live in a detached house they can buy a semi-detached house which is not so expensive. This kind of house is joined to a house on one side but not on the other. Usually it is an accommodation for two families.

In the cities common people usually live in town houses or terraced houses which are in a row of houses. These are houses for several families with the separate entrances for each family but under the same roof. Wealthy people in the West (Europe, the US) prefer to live out of the cities in the mansions, cottages or bungalows if the climate in the country is mild.

Flats in America are called apartments. The most expensive apartments are in the skyscrapers and are called penthouses. Penthouses occupy the upper floors of the skyscrapers and partly the roof where people can have winter gardens, swimming pools etc.

Students all over the world live in the hostels or dormitories but some of them can rent a flat. Usually it is a single-room flat with a bathroom and a kitchen. In America such flats are called studios and in Britain they are called bedsitters.

Step 2. Answer the questions to the text:

1. What does the type of dwelling depend on?

2. What is the most common type of accommodation in Ukraine?

3. What is the most prestigious type of dwelling in the USA?

4. What can you say about typical British house?

5. Where do wealthy people in the west prefer to live?

6. What kinds of flats in America can you name?

7. How are bedsitters called in America?
