A TRIP BY AIR

I want to reach my destination as quickly as possible. I am in a great hurry. So I think the best way to travel is by plane. I book my ticket in advance.

On the appointed day, after packing my luggage, I proceed to the airport by bus. I already see the big airplane which is to carry me. Soon I board the plane. It is a comfortable jet airplane with 100 seats. I look around. In front I already see the pilot and the mechanic in the cockpit.

We all recline in comfortable arm-chairs. I notice there is a buffet in the rear part of the plane where the stewardess is already preparing sandwiches.

Very soon the plane takes off. In a few minutes we are already above the clouds. I ask the pilot at what altitude we are flying.

"8000 meters", he replies.

The land can sometimes be seen below between the clouds. It looks like a geographical map. Our plane is due at its destination in six hours. I read some magazines, then for a short while I quietly doze.

Soon the stewardess brings us some tea and sandwiches. I eat with great appetite.

Our plane arrives at its destination exactly on time at 12 sharp (at noon).

What a saving of time!

It’s common knowledge that nowadays people travel a lot. They travel on business and for pleasure, about the country and abroad. There are various means of travel. We can travel by train, boat, airplane, car and finally we can travel on foot.

Although we all agree that the future belongs to the air transport, the railway is still one of the most popular means of communication. Of course, if people are short of time and have to travel a long distance they usually travel by air. But if they have time they prefer to go by train. With a train you have speed, comfort and pleasure combined. From the comfortable corner seat of a carriage you have a splendid view of the countryside. If you are hungry you can have a meal in the dining- car and if a journey is long you can have a comfortable bed in a sleeper.

A big railway station is a very busy and interesting place. There are a lot of platforms at which trains come in and go out. The porters are very busy carrying luggage to the train or pushing it on their trucks. Some passengers get out, others get in. Those who haven’t got their tickets in advance wait in queues at the booking office. At the bookstalls people choose books, magazines and newspapers for the journey. At the cloak- room some people leave and take their luggage.

There are a lot of notices in a big railway station. You may see ENTRANCE and EXIT. There is also a WAITING ROOM where you can relax until it is time to board your train. If you are thirsty or hungry you’ll go to the REFRESHMENT ROOM. If you don’t know the number of the platform from which your train leaves, look for the notices ARRIVALS and DEPARTURES. They will tell you the number of the platform. When you arrive in a large town you may leave your heavy luggage at the station. In this case you’ll look for the CLOAK ROOM or LEFT LUGGAGE OFFICE. You can also see the notice BOOKING OFFICE. This is where you buy ticket. If you don’t know the time or the platform your train leaves from you’ll go to the INQUIRY OFFICE or the INFORMATION BUREAU.

At last you manage to make your way through the crowd and get out to the platform. You show your ticket to the guard and enter a beautiful carriage. You stow away you luggage and get out on to the platform for fresh air and bid farewell to the well- wishers who have come to see you off. But you have scarcely time to kiss and hug your friends when the station- master on duty, in a red cup, signals the train. You hear no shrill whistle of the engine- the engine pulls out of the station noiselessly and without a jerk. You can start up a conversation with your fellow-passengers and soon you get to know who is who and what.

The dining- car steward happens to come along and you can take bookings for dinner or supper.

The guard makes your bed and you can take your towel and go to the toilet to wash yourself. After a hearty meal you feel tired so you decide to turn in. You get into your upper berth and begin to absorb the beauty of the changing scenes that fly past you.
