St. Petersburg
One of the main and most beautiful cities of Russia is St. Petersburg. It is not as old as Moscow. It was founded by Peter the Great in 1703. In 1712 St. Petersburg, a city of great beauty, with palaces, cathedrals, churches, government buildings became the capital of Russia. But since 1918 (when Moscow became the capital of our country again) people often call St. Petersburg the second capital of Russia.
St. Petersburg is situated on the Neva river and is an important seaport. The area of St. Petersburg is about 600 square kilometres. The population is about 5 million people and it is growing rapidly.
The climate is changeable and not very pleasant, particularly in late autumn. The most beautiful time of the year is “the month of white nights” in June.
St. Petersburg is a big cultural centre of Russia. It is famous for architectural monuments and museums. The people who live in St. Petersburg are fond and proud of their city. Their living conditions are improving. A lot of new houses with all modern conveniences have appeared during the last 15 years.
The transport system is developing. It has become easier to get about the city.
St. Petersburg is an important business centre with multi-storey hotels and offices. It is an important industrial centre with a number of plants and factories producing equipment and different consumer goods.
St. Petersburg is indeed a wonderful city. The Winter Palace, the Hermitage, the Russian Museum, St. Isaac’s Cathedral, the Peter-and –Paul fortress, the Admiralty building attract thousands of tourists from every corner of the world.
In 2003 the three hundredth anniversary of this magnificent city was celebrated. A lot of world leaders from different countries arrived in St. Petersburg on the occasion of such an important event. They took part in special ceremonies held in the city.
Nowadays the citizens of St. Petersburg are proud of not only the exceptional beauty of their native city, but by the fact that such politicians of modern Russia as Dmitry Medvedev and Vladimir Putin come from this city.
