3 The republic of belarus Geographical position.

The Republic of Belarus is located in the eastern part of Europe. territory of Belarus is 207.6 thousand square kilometres. The longest distance, 650 km, is from West to East, and 560 km from North to South. The highest point in Belarus is 346 meters. More than half the land is used for agriculture. Some one-third is densely forested with large stands of spruce, pine, oak, and/or beech, everywhere interspersed with beautiful white/silver birch. There are more than 20 thousand rivers and streams in Belarus with the total length of 91 thousand kilometres, and about 11 thousand lakes, including 470 lakes with the area exceeding 0.5 km2 each. Naroch is the largest lake in Belarus (79.2 km2, the deepest point about 25 m). The most important river is the Dnepr.

Natural resources.

The Republic of Belarus possesses a good potential for the development of its own raw material facilities which are able to completely meet the requirements of the national economy Belarus ranks second in Europe for its stock of stone salts. Fifty-two petroleum deposits are known in the Republic, with 30 of them being worked on. The annual extraction output is about 2 min tons. Peat areas occupy 12.3% of the Belarusian territory.

State and Government structure and bodies.

Belarus is a presidential republic, governed by a president and the National Assembly. Assembly is a bicameral parliament comprising the 110-member House of Representatives (the lower house) and the 64-member Council of the Republic (the upper house).). The government includes a Council of Ministers, headed by the prime minister and five deputy prime ministers. There are 3 branches of power in Belarus..)They are Executive,Legislative and Judicial branch of the government.

Belarusian economy: the economic system, sectors of the economy: manufacturing, agriculture, services and their proportion in gdp.

Belarus is a country with a resilient economy and diversified industrial profile. The Belarusian Government pursues the strategy of cautious reform with great concern for social welfare and stability, which is called a socially oriented market economy. Trade, services, and the industrial sector are the main sources of the country's economic development. About 100 major enterprises form the core of the Belarusian industry. Belarusian agriculture specializes in animal farming (milk and meat products), flax, potato, grain and vegetable crops, sugar beets, rapes and fodder crops. Belarus has sufficient economic potential and human resources to be a proper member of the world community and the Belarusian people strive to make their land prosperous and flourishing.

Recent economic trends and problems.

Under the conditions of the unsustainable financial system, the government nevertheless used to stick to the three priorities: increase of the export potential, augmentation of food production, and implementation of the housing construction program.
