    1. The famous cliche says: "One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter". Explain how you understand it and say if you agree with this statement or not.

    2. Choose one of the definitions/descriptions of terrorism form the list below, read it out, try to guess who wrote it (academic, politician, security expert, journalist, member of the public, etc) and explain what is meant by it. How exact does this definition/description seem to you?

  1. Terrorism is the tactic of demanding the impossible, and demanding it at gunpoint.

  2. Terrorism is the lowest level of warfare, requiring the least resources for the inferior side. Terrorism is war on the cheap.

  3. Terrorism is like cancer.

  4. Terrorism is an anxiety-inspiring method of repeated violent action, employed by (semi-) clandestine individual, group or state actors, for idiosyncratic, criminal or political reasons, whereby - in contrast to assassination - the direct targets of violence are not the main targets.

  12. Terrorism is the unlawful use of force and violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives.

4. Look through the definitions/descriptions of terrorism in the previous exercise and decide which one is:

  • the most precise

  • the most frequently cited in formal contexts

  • the most frequently cited in informal contexts

  • the best

5. Look through the texts in the READING section above, write out all actions that can be committed by terrorist groups and say if all of them are acts of terrorism regardless of a particular situation.
