  • fulfillment of basic illegibility requirements or a high academic score in any single discipline or any other outstanding achievement alone is not sufficient for selection.

Motivation and extra-curricula activities

Unfortunately, motivation and extra-curricula activities are not used in selection of students in Belarus.

With the increase of competition motivation becomes the key factor in selection students. A lot of candidates are well-qualified academically, that’s why such factors as extra-curricula activities and work experience become more and more important in the process of selection. It is believed that by participating in such outside activities applicants can demonstrate their special talents, level of maturity and leadership qualities.

Tuition fee

Varies between US$ 2 and 2.5 thousand or education may be even free

From 5 to 15 thousand dollars per year

Varies from US$10 to 36 thousand depending on the school. If a student is a resident of the state where he studies, it may be 3 times cheaper.

Loan assistance

Banks also started to offer financial assistance to students in Belarus but it is not much popular because of the high interest rate.

If students demonstrate financial needs they are often offered the combination of grants and loan assistance to meet their expenses. They have to repay the loan after graduation.

Grants

About 75% of students in Belarus receive grants

The number of students who receive grants in The USA and Great Britain is much less – 3-5%.

Such grants are offered for the most talented students who demonstrate financial needs.

Membership in professional associations

However, while in many countries this membership is mandatory, it is advisable for those who want a research career.

All medical graduates are the members of professional associations in the UK and the USA.

Licenses

Belarus doctors are allowed to take licensing exams after they obtain the first category

After graduation young specialists are ready to take licensing examinations, both written and clinical.

Internship

After the final exams graduates work in the approval clinics under the supervision of highly qualified specialists for a year. This period is called ‘internship’.

Many students in Belarus would like to study in the USA or in Great Britain.

We can apply for:

  • Professional education program, i.e. Career rented education;

  • Graduate Degree (Masters Degree, Doctoral Degree);

  • Non-graduate Degree (12 months or less) to experience life in campus;

  • Non-degree student status or special student status.

At the same time, teachers in the west are sure that eastern students are more quit and participate less in class. They are not encouraged to express their ideas unless asked. They often think that asking teacher questions is a challenge to teacher’s authority.

Students from the East are expected to memorize everything they are assigned, while western students are taught to solve problems on their own. Much attention is given to their thinking skills.

So there are different educational systems in the East and West, but they have the same goals.
