7.2. Look into the following statements and prove your own point of view.

1) Mass media was, is and will be commercial only. It is commercial in each and every capitalist economy. It exists to make money. Anybody who says that that's not how it should be is simply out of touch with the reality. The real question is the level of maturity (responsibility, skills ect.) of those involved. It's a universal problem. The only cure here is to be patient and go through the learning curve that may take years, tens of years and more. Serge at Sun Feb 15 12:37:30 2004

2) In the past, newspaper executives understood the symbiotic relationship between their product and books. People who read books also read newspapers. From that basic tenet came a philosophy: If you foster books, you foster reading. If you foster reading, you foster newspapers. Short-term gains will become long-term losses, as book reviews allow newspapers to serve an important role as cultural arbiter. Michael Connelly

3) The root of our ongoing difficulties and disillusionments with the news coverage we read and hear" lies in the fact that "we tend to confuse the product of journalism with its processes. Journalism itself is essentially a process, a way to search for truth, not a tool to ratify it.

Frederick Allen the managing

editor of American Heritage

1.1. Each day brings new examples of how information and communication technology (ICT) is reshaping the lives of people around the world. To one degree or another, the digital revolution has arrived in just about every corner of the globe. On the Internet and the World Wide Web, people are governing, learning, communicating, debating, “politicking”, shopping, and experimenting—conducting all kinds of interactions in ways only made possible by ICT. The Internet has brought into being a virtual world that, like the universe itself, is expanding every moment, full of promise, hope, and not a little mystery. But challenges remain if it is to achieve its full promise.
