Examples of Sentence – analysis

1. Simple Sentence

I helped him.

This sentence is simple because it consists of one predicative line. It is two-member, complete, extended, declarative.

I – a subject expressed by a personal pronoun in the Nominative case, singular.

helped – a simple verbal predicate, expressed by a finite verb “to help” in the past

tense, the non-perfect form of correlation, the non-continuous aspect, the

indicative mood, the active voice.

him – a direct object expressed by a personal pronoun in the objective case,

singular.

2. The Compound Sentence

The room was dark, but the street was lighter.

This sentence is composite, because it consists of two predicative lines. It is a compound sentence as it contains two coordinate clauses which are equal in rank. They are joined by means of the conjunction “but”, i.e. syndectically. This coordinate connection is adversative.

The scheme: but

The 1-st clause – simple, two-member, complete, unextended.

The room – a subject expressed by a noun, the Common case, singular.

was dark – a compound nominal predicate which consists of the link verb “was”

and a nominal part (the predicative) “dark”.

was – a link verb expressed by the verb “to be”, the past tense, the non-perfect

form of correlation, the indicative mood, singular.

dark – a predicative, expressed by an adjective.

The 2-nd clause – simple, two-member, complete, unextended.

the street – a subject expressed by a noun, the Common case, singular.

was lighter – a compound nominal predicate which consists of a link verb and a

predicative.

was – a link verb expressed by the verb “to be”, the past tense, the non-perfect form

of correlation, the indicative mood, singular.

3. The Complex Sentence.

You will like the film better | if you don`t read the book.

This sentence is composite as it contain 2 clauses: a principal (main) clause and a subordinate clause of condition.

The principal clause (1) is simple, 2-member, complete, extended.

you – a subject expressed by a personal pronoun in the Nominative case, plural.

will like – a simple verbal predicate expressed by the finite verb “to like”, the future

tense, non-perfect, the indicative mood, active.

the film – a direct object expressed by a noun, the Common case, singular.

better – an adverbial modifier of degree expressed by an adverb “well” in the

comparative degree.

The Adverbial clause of Condition (2) is simple, 2-member, complete, extended.

you – a subject expressed by a personal pronoun in the Nominative case, plural.

don`t read – a simple verbal predicate expressed by the finite verb “to read”, the

negative form, the present tense, non-perfect, non-continuous, the

indicative mood, active.

the book – a direct object expressed by a noun, the Common case, singular.
