Pollution

The British, like many others Europeans, are becoming more and more worried about their environment. Here are some of the environmental problems that they meet with.

As the population of large cities like London, Birmingham and Manchester continues to grow, pollution problems become worse.

The air in many towns and cities is being polluted by traffic and industry. The number of cars and lorries is growing all the time. On the one hand, they bring mobility to millions of people, but on the other hand, they need bigger, better and more expensive roads, which often ruin the countryside. Traffic in the cities is getting worse and worse. Water pollution has become a serious problem in many British rivers. People living near airports suffer from the noise of increasingly larger and more powerful jet airliners taking off and landing.

There are over 150 super cities in the world with population from one to 15 million and more. Tokyo, New York, London, Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro and Moscow are just a few of the cities which have become super cities.

People in the suffer cities suffer from polluted environment: bad water, bad air and noise. A new term, urban climate, is used now for such cities. It means high temperature, oppressive atmosphere and interesting smog.

Some experts consider that it is practically impossible to protect the big cities from pollution. The World Health Organization (WHO) has been studying air pollution around the world for over 8 years. It measured two things: the level of sulphur dioxide in the air and the level of smoke. Sulphur dioxide and smoke pollute water and have serious effect on forests, buildings and health of people.

In the WHO report it is shown that the cities with the most considerable level of CO2 in the air are Milan, Teheran, Prague, Santiago and San Paulo. However, some cities with clean air get worse in winter. Helsinki, for example, becomes one of the cities, with the largest proportion of it in the air in winter. This must be connected with the heating of houses. One can also mention Glasgow and Warsaw which suffer in the same way.

It is practically impossible to protect big cities from pollution. Measure is significantly decrease the level of sulphur dioxide in the air and the level of smoke.

Job Outlook

With land costs rising and the public demanding more beautiful spaces, the importance of good site planning and landscape design grows. Also, new construction is increasingly contingent upon compliance with environmental regulations, land use zoning, and water restrictions. Landscape architects also will be increasingly involved in preserving and restoring wetlands and other environmentally sensitive sites. However, opportunities will vary from year to year, and by geographic region, depending on local economic conditions. I addition to the work related to new development and construction, landscape architects are expected to be involved in historic preservation, land reclamation, and refurbishment of existing sites. They are also doing more residential design work as households spend more on landscaping than in the past. Because landscape architects can work on many different types of projects, they may have an easier time than other design professionals finding employment when traditional construction slows down.

New graduates can expect to face competition for jobs in the largest and most prestigious landscape architecture firms, but should face good job opportunities overall as demand increases, while number of graduates of landscape architecture holds steady or goes up slightly. Opportunities will be best for landscape architects who develop strong technical skills-such as computer design – and communication skills, as well as knowledge of environmental codes and regulations.

Because many landscape architects work for small firms or self-employed, benefits tend to be less generous than those provided to workers in large organizations.

Landscape architects use their knowledge of design, construction, land – use planning, and environmental issues to develop a landscape project. Landscape architects also must know how to grow and use plants in the landscape. I would like to give some examples of how some of landscape firms and organizations advertise themselves.
