Make a survey. How many people in your class live in a house? And how many in an apartment
Nearly everyone in the US lives in an apartment. True or false? Check your answer with the information on these pages.
My name's Janie. I'm moving to Los Angeles in the fall, but I have to find someplace to live. Apartment rents are high, so I'm looking at ads for roommates. It's not going to be easy to find the right place. I smoke and have a pet cat that I'm very attached to. All of the ads for roommates say "no smoking" and "no pets"... I don't know what to do
3. What should Janie do to find a place to live? Talk about your advice for |Janie with the rest of the class.
Owning your own home is a part of the American Dream and about two-thirds of Americans are homeowners. Most of them save for years, then make a down payment and take a mortgage or loan tor the rest of the money. Approximately 66 percent of Americans live in a one-family house, 27 percent in an apartment, and 7 percent in a mobile home.
Some people newer own a house or an apartment because they can't save enough money tor a down payment, or because they prefer to rent. If prices are high near where people work, they have to commute long distances by ear, bus, or train every day.In the city, home may be in an apartment building called a condominium (often shortened to condo) or a co-op. Out in the suburbs and in the country, home is more likely to be a one- or two-family house.
Some buildings have door attendants (usually doormen) for security. An apartment in a building without an elevator is called a walk-up.
Mobile homes, located in mobile-home parks, are becoming more popular, because they are comfortable, inexpensive, and easy to take care of.
Traditional American houses are two stories high and made of wood. The yard (or garden) often has a white picket fence around it
Town houses are attached and built of brick. They are more common in northern cities. Stucco houses are found in California, Florida, and other southern states.
4. Look at the photos of the houses and talk about your answers to these questions with the rest of the class.
A. Which house would you rather live in?
B. Which house is most like the kind of house found in your country?
C. Would you rather live in an apartment or a house?
