7. Study the following examples. Translate them into Russian. Use the same constructions in sentences of your own.

1. He got his sister to do the cooking and cleaning for him. 2. You can have him read the book at least. 3. She won’t have anybody cross her. 4. She couldn’t have him waste his time. 5. She wondered if she would ever be able to get him to acknowledge his defeat. 6. I couldn’t get him to do his work properly. 7. You will never get him to admit a mistake. 8. The teacher had him answer the questions in writing.

8. Paraphrase so as to use the modal verb would. Make other necessary changes.

Model: She always insisted on having things her own way.

She would have things her own way.

1. It’s just like him to spoil the fun with his silly remarks and flat jokes. 2. He is not the kind of man to stir a finger to help. 3. Though everybody was dead tired she kept on asking her questions. 4. She didn’t give me her address though I had asked her to several times. 5. We told her that we would be coming over to her help with the packing, but she didn’t even want to hear of it. 6. I told her to listen but she said that she didn’t care to. 7. The girl insisted on wearing a light coat though her mother had told her to put on something warmer.

9. Note the effect of up and out on the meaning of the verb. Trans­late the sentences into Russian. Give your own examples.

  1. 1. He always turns up like a bad penny. 2. Now, you’re making up stories again! 3. He hardly ever shows up nowadays. 4. You mustn’t stay up for me. 5. The news made me sit up. 6. She has her own ideas about bringing up children. 7. He’s a very light sleeper. He’ll wake up at the slightest noise. 8. She looked up and smiled. 9. She was in the kitchen washing up. 10. What time do you get up on Sundays?

  2. 1. I can’t make out what he means. There seems to be little log­ic in what he’s saying. 2. She felt terribly ill. A cold sweat broke out on her forehead and her hands were clammy. 3. I can’t supply you with a ready answer. You’ll have to find out things for yourself. 4. She was put out by the remark. 5. The war broke out and for many years he was separated from his family. 6. You could have brought out the difference a little more clearly.

10. The following phrases often occur in the English language. Make sentences with each.

11. Study the phrases with trouble and word. Use them in sentences of your own.

А. 1. He always takes a lot of trouble over his work. 2. You’d better watch out for him. He may make trouble for you. 3. If you do your packing now it will mean saving a lot of trouble later on. 4. I’d hate to give you more trouble than is absolutely necessary. 5. Asking for trouble again? 6. I’m terribly sorry to have put you to all this trouble. 7. She said she was having trouble with her boy. 8. Those tricks of yours will get you into trouble one day.

В. 1. It’s too exciting for words. 2. Strangely enough, he was as good as his word. 3. The new hotel is the last word in comfort. 4. He repeated the statement, word for word. 5. He looks too tired for anything. In other words, he needs a holiday. 6. I have had no word from him yet. 7. Should you be going away, please leave word for me with the secretary. 8. In a word, I didn’t believe her story. 9. He never breathed a word of what had happened. 10. He didn’t say it in so many words, but that is what he actually meant.

12. Translate the following into English using idea.

1. Сначала он просто-напросто растерялся. Потом у него возник план. 2. У тебя о ней сложилось совершенно неправильное представление. 3. А я и не знал, что вы знакомы! 4. Все, что ты рассказываешь, звучит очень заманчиво, только я что-то очень смутно себе представляю, как это можно осуществить. 5. He можешь ли ты мне рассказать в общих чертах, что же там произошло? 6. Ты не можешь мне подсказать, кто бы мог помочь в этом деле? 7. У него была высокая температура и он плохо понимал, что происходит вокруг. 8. У нее мелькнула мысль, что все не так просто, как это ей показалось вначале. 9.— Куда он мог спрятать ключи от шкафа? Понятия не имею. 10. У меня такое чувство, что он приедет именно сегодня. 11. Вот уж никак не думал, что ты живешь так далеко от меня! 12. Она никак не предполагала, что он может обидеться на ее замечание.
