Assignment 11 ( chapters 21-22)

Task 1. Find in the text the following words and word combinations, translate them into Russian, find the synonyms, explain the meaning:

- now and then

- to look washed out

- to know which side one’s bread is buttered

- first and foremost

- to do smth for one’s sake

- to be frightened out of one’s wits

- to ask for trouble

- to go all to pieces

- to provide smb with board and lodging

- to have pluck for smth

Task 2. Compose the sentences of your own using the words and word combinations suggested.

Task 3. Use the given words and word combinations in one situation.

Task 4. Continue the sentences according to the text:

Task 5. Agree or disagree to the statement. Decide whether it is true or false. Correct the false ones. Give the full answer:

- During the way to dinner party Walter spoke all the time and looked quite happy.

- As usual when they were dining out Walter gave Kitty a smiling glance now and then.

- Some neighbours noticed that Walter looked rather washed out.

- Walter was too shy to make a scandal, he never made a speech if he could help it.

- Charlie was popular in the Colony but he couldn’t be very useful for Walter.

- It was unusual for Kitty to see Walter at home that hour.

- The conversation between them was still and friendly.

- Kitty thought that Walter wanted to go to Mei-tan-fu to kill himself.

- Walter wanted to go to Mei-tan-fu alone, Kitty was too delicate to go with him.

- Kitty agreed to accompany Walter to Mei-tan-fu.

Task 7. Answer the questions:

- What was her reaction?

- She was shocked, wasn’t she?

- How did Walter behave?

Task 8. Translate into English using words and word combinations studied:

- Майкл выглядел абсолютно измотанным в последнее время.

- Прежде всего, ты должен рассказать все для ее же блага.

- При виде незнакомца Мэри до ужаса испугалась.

Task 9. Express your opinion to the points. Give your reasons:

- Walter knew which side his bread was buttered.

- Walter wanted to go to Mei-tan-fu to kill himself.

- Walter wanted Kitty to go to Mei-tan-fu to die.

- When suggested to go to Mei-tan-fu Walter was merely trying to frighten Kitty.

Task 10. Retell the content of the chapters using the active vocabulary and words and word combinations studied.
